BOSTON - Freshman
Delfi Coulo scored the game's lone goal with 2:01 to play and junior
Sophie Ortyl turned in an incredible 10-save performance to lead the Boston University field hockey team to a thrilling 1-0 victory over No. 4 Boston College on Sunday afternoon at New Balance Field.
It was the Terriers' first win over the Eagles since 2016 and it marked the first home win in the rivalry since 2005. BU's last win over a top-5 ranked team came in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament when it knocked off No. 5 Iowa in overtime.
The goal was Coulo's first as a Terrier and helped BU improve to 2-3 on the season. The Eagles moved to an even 3-3 with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU nearly jumped out to an early lead as Coulo drew a penalty stroke on a breakaway in the third minute but classmate Molly Driscoll's attempt went wide of the cage.
- The teams traded corners soon after but neither was able to record a shot on their opportunity.
- Ortyl was the story for the rest of the opening quarter, making four impressive saves, including three during three consecutive corners by the Eagles.
- BC had the best chance in the second quarter but Ortyl came up with saves before and on a corner in the 22nd minute.
- There was only one shot recorded in the third quarter and it came less than two minutes in as a BC bid nicked off the left post.
- BC went on to earn two corners later in the third but the BU defense did not allow a shot on either chance.
- BU was challenged early in the fourth when junior Nicole Lauro and Coulo received yellow cards 90 seconds apart.
- The Terrier defense stepped up and did not allow a shot on goal while shorthanded.
- After stops by Ortyl in the 55th and 58th minutes, senior Megan Wetzel caused a turnover after a restart and sprung senior Caroline O'Brien with a lead pass that led to the winning goal.
- O'Brien penetrated the top of the circle and cut right before finding Coulo for a redirect and the game's lone goal.
