BOSTON - The Boston University field hockey team dropped a 2-0 contest to visiting American in the Patriot League opener on Friday at New Balance Field.
The Eagles scored off corners in the 29th and 39th minutes before holding off a late push by the Terriers.

Sophie Ortyl made eight saves in goal for BU, which falls to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in Patriot League play. American improves to 2-4 with a 1-0 conference mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers earned the game's first three corners but were unable to take advantage of the opportunities.
- The first corner of the day for American proved to be dangerous around the 10-minute mark but Ortyl made a save before junior Maggie Driscoll earned her second defensive save of the season.
- Ortyl made three of her eight saves in the second quarter.Â
- American used the final corner of the opening half to get on the board as a shot attempt by Lotti Sume was tipped up into the net from the middle of the cage by Jordan Reicher at the 28:46 mark.
- Down 1-0 at the half, the Terriers opened the third quarter by quickly earning a corner, but the resulting play ended up being blocked by the AU defense.
- The Eagles doubled their lead at 38:29 when Sume found Roffo for a redirect in the right circle off a corner.
- BU turned up the heat offensively during the final five minutes of regulation, earning six corners and seven shots in the span, but American netminder Pauline Gineste and her defense held on to preserve the shutout.
GAME NOTES
- BU held a 10-9 advantage in corners while American had the edge in shots, 16-13.
- Gineste turned in an eight-save shutout for the visitors.
