Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

BU Falls Short at No. 14 Army, 17-15

WEST POINT, N.Y. – BU women's lacrosse (5-2, 0-1 PL) battled to a tough 17-15 loss at No. 14 Army West Point (6-0, 1-0 PL) on Saturday. In the loss, eight separate Terriers scored and senior goalie Arielle Hammer spent the full 60 minutes in net.

Sophomore Matty Spaeth and senior Claire Gola each had four goals on the day, marking the third time each of them has scored at least a hat trick this season. Freshman Jayne Feeney continued her points streak with two goals of her own as the only other Terrier to have multiple on the day.

Grad student Maddie MacMaster, juniors Tobey Tick and Kendall Sims, senior Jennifer Barry and sophomore Hannah Tillier each had one goal apiece. Sims' free position goal marked her first of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Army was first to strike in the game with a goal at 10:24 off the free position.
  • The Black Knights followed that up with another free position goal just under two minutes later.
  • BU's first goal of the game came from Spaeth who came from behind the net to score.
  • Despite two free position attempts for the Terriers through the remainder of the quarter, Army scored three unanswered goals to close the opening stanza with a 5-1 lead.
  • Army received a yellow card at the close of the first quarter for crosschecking, but BU did not make anything of the woman-up advantage.
  • At the 12:08 mark in the second, Feeney fought to the front of the net and scored to start a three-goal streak for the Terriers.
  • A strong defense at the net by Hammer helped BU regain control of the ball to give Spaeth a chance to score and close in 5-3.
  • Twenty-one seconds later, Gola got her first of the day thanks to an assist by sophomore Libby Carbo.
  • Army looked as though it scored, but the Black Knights were called for an illegal stick and the goal was waved off.
  • A free position shot taken by MacMaster resulted in a BU goal and tied the game at 5-5 midway through the second quarter.
  • Army answered with two goals of its own, one of which came on a breakaway chance, to regain the lead.
  • Gola was awarded a free position chance and scored her second of the day to close in on Army.
  • The Black Knights grabbed two additional goals before the close of the half.
  • Spaeth, who was helped by Barry, logged her third goal of the day to close out scoring in the first half with Army leading 9-7.
  • BU started the third quarter with a woman-up advantage but nothing came of the opportunity.
  • Army struck first in the second half with a goal at the 12:30 mark.
  • BU was quick to answer with another free position goal, this time thanks to Feeney.
  • Gola once again cut Army's lead to one with a goal of her own thanks to a pass from Barry.
  • Army took a shot which was initially saved by Hammer but found the rebound and ultimately scored.
  • BU went on to score the final three goals of the quarter thanks to Tillier, Sims' free position goal and Barry's first of the game.
  • Barry's goal gave BU the 12-11 lead headed into the final quarter and marked the only time the Terriers had the lead.
  • Army controlled the final quarter from the get-go as it went on a four-goal run. It would have been five goals if the Black Knights were not called for an illegal stick for the second time.
  • Barry found Gola at the 8:02 mark to close in 15-13.
  • BU was awarded two separate yellow cards which resulted in Army goals both times.
  • With 2:46 to go, Tick picked up a loose ball and found the back of the net on the woman-up advantage thanks to an Army yellow card over a minute earlier.
  • The final goal of the game went to the Terriers with 1:13 to go after a pass on the free position attempt found its way to Spaeth who brought the final score to Army 17, BU 15.
