BOSTON - Senior
Sydney Johnson dropped 20 on 8-of-12 shooting, three other Terriers scored at least 16 points, and the Boston University women's basketball program reached triple digits for the first time in nearly 36 years with a 100-57 triumph over Loyola Maryland on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.
BU (16-6, 11-0 PL) captured its 11th win in a row in a game where it led for all but 36 seconds. The Terriers tied their single-game program record with 16 three-pointers to reach 100 points for the first time since Feb. 13, 1987, a 106-48 win over Brooklyn.
Johnson was one of three Terriers to nail four three-pointers. Classmate
Maggie Pina posted 19 points with three assists and three steals, while sophomore
Alex Giannaros canned four triples for 18 points on 70 percent shooting. Junior
Caitlin Weimar notched 16 points and nine rebounds.
Lex Therien led the Greyhounds (7-15, 2-9 PL) with 14 points and four steals. Devyne Newman and Taleah Dixon added 13 and 12 points, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU raced out to a 14-2 lead in the opening 3:17 of the game. Pina and Giannaros each hit triples during the spurt.
- Back-to-back threes from Johnson and Pina extended the advantage to 22-8 with 3:29 left in the first quarter.
- Senior Liz Shean found classmate Maren Durant underneath for a layup 25 seconds into the second quarter that gave the Terriers their first 20-point lead, 32-12.
- The lead ballooned to as high as 28 points in that stanza. Johnson' three after a Greyhound traveling call made it 53 first-half points for BU, a season-high.
- In the third, Pina's acrobatic layup by the right block 1:48 out of halftime led to a three-point play, putting the Terriers on top 59-31.
- Starting at the 6:41 mark with Johnson's driving layup, BU scored 11-consecutive points. Weimar's and-one opportunity with 4:24 on the clock pushed the advantage to 70-36.
- Johnson capped the third with a three from Durant's pass in transition before the buzzer for an 83-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
- The Terriers started the final frame 0-for-6 from the field, but Pina stripped the ball from Caroline Orza and took it to the hoop for a layup to make it 88-52.
- BU scored all of its final 15 points on three-pointers. Pina and senior Annabelle Larnard canned one each with 28 seconds, then junior Kelsi Mingo nailed one on a dish from Larnard.
- Shean buried two in the final 36 seconds, with her right-wing three in front of the BU bench falling with under seven seconds left.
