WINCHESTER, Mass. – Opening Patriot League play, the Boston University women's tennis team claimed a 4-3 win over two-time defending conference champion Army West Point on Saturday evening at the Winchester Tennis Club.
With their second one-point win of the season, the Terriers improve to 5-1 (1-0 PL), as the Black Knights (8-3, 5-1 PL) saw their eight-match win streak snapped.
BU won two of the three doubles matches for the first point and then captured three singles points, including two in straight sets, for the team win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freshman Kaitlin Tan and junior Shelly Yaloz recorded a 6-2 win at line 3 before sophomore Erica Di Battista and freshman Victoria Carlsten teamed for a 6-4 victory in the No. 2 slot.
- Army avoided the doubles sweep by edging seniors Lily Burchell and Emily Kim in the top match, 7-6.
- Burchell bounced back with a dominating 6-1, 6-2 singles win at line 5, while Tan cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the No. 2 slot.
- The two-time PL Player of the Year Joyner held off Carlsten, 6-4, 6-4, for Army's first point.
- Both Di Battista (#3) and Yaloz (#6) won a set but eventually came up short, as Army evened the match.
- Kim won just one game in her first set but battled back in the second to force a third and then coasted to a 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory.
