BOSTON – Squaring off against Holy Cross in a Turnpike Trophy matchup Saturday afternoon at Case Gym, Holy Cross used the 3-point shot to pull away late, downing the Boston University women's basketball team 60-57.
Nia Irving posted game highs of 21 points and eight rebounds, shooting an efficient 7-of-10 from the floor.
Corrine Williams also finished in double figures with 10 points, netting six of those in the fourth quarter, and posted a team-high four assists.
How it Happened
- BU exploded out to an 8-0 lead over the first three minutes, scoring on its first four possessions.
- Holy Cross swung the early momentum to its side, reeling off a 10-2 run to tie the game up until Tenisha Pressley's put BU back on top, 12-10, at the end of the opening quarter.
- The Crusaders took the lead the start the second before Irving and Williams combined for the next five points to put the Terriers back in front, 17-13.
- Katie Nelson and Irving notched back-to-back points in the paint to push BU's command to 22-16 midway through the frame.
- Holy Cross answered with a 6-1 run to hold the scoreboard in its favor, 24-23, with 3:20 left on the clock.
- The lead was short-lived as the Terriers closed out the first half with a 9-2 run, capped by a fast break layup by Nelson at the buzzer to head into the break with a 32-26 advantage.
- Kara Sheftic opened the second half converting on back-to-back floaters, giving BU a 10-point lead at 36-26 with 8:27 on the clock.
- Once again, the Crusaders chipped away at BU's command as they rode a 16-4 run to close out the quarter to claim a 42-40 lead at the end of the third.
- BU took advantage of the charity stripe to start the fourth, while Williams put in six of BU's first nine points in the fourth to push its lead to 49-47 with 5:58 ticks left.
- Holy Cross hit a 3-pointer from the wing to go ahead, 52-51, with 3:49 left.
- Irving connected on a pair from the charity stripe the shift the scoreboard back in favor of BU, but the Crusaders hit another shot from beyond-the-arc go up, 55-33, with 2:26 to go.
- Pressley tied the game up from the free throw line at 55-all with 1:02 remaining, but Holy Cross regained the upper hand on the ensuing possession to go up, 57-55.
- Following a Crusader free throw, Irving muscled her way through the lane to put BU within one, 58-57, with 13.6 seconds left.
- BU fouled Holy Cross on the following possession, where the Crusaders sunk both and Williams' last-second 3-pointer fell astray as Holy Cross held on for the 60-57 victory.
