BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Led by four players scoring in double-digits, the Boston University women's basketball team recorded its sixth straight victory with a 68-42 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in game one of the Christmas City Classic Saturday afternoon at Stabler Arena. BU improves to 9-3 with the victory while FDU drops to 4-6.
Junior Rashidat Agboola posted her fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Terriers. Senior Kristen Sims tallied 13 points while classmates Mo Moran and Chantell Alford added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Junior Danielle Callahan chipped in nine points, all coming from beyond the arc.
Danielle Pankey and Kelsey Cruz led the Knights with 11 points each while Amanda Andrades and Brianna Thomas each pulled down six rebounds.
The Terriers shot a season-high 50.0 percent (25-of-50) and also converted 50.0 percent from the 3-point line (11-of-22). The Knights converted 26.2 percent of their shots (16-of-61) and went 2-of-10). FDU held a 43-36 advantage in rebounds.
BU took a 47-14 lead into the break with the 47 points marking the Terriers highest total in a half this season. The Terriers dominated the Knights in the first half, as BU jumped out to a 12-0 lead following a 3-pointer from Alford with 16:24 to play in the half. The Knights scored their first point of the game with a free throw from Danielle Pankey.
FDU did not score its first field goal until Kelsey Cruz hit a jumper at the 12:01 mark to cut BU's lead to 20-3. Cruz then hit a 3-pointer following a BU turnover but the Terriers responded with a 18-0 run over the next seven minutes to extend its lead to 38-6 before Cruz added another layup.
FDU outscored BU in the second half by a margin of 28-21, but the Terriers first-half lead was too much for the Knights to overcome. FDU opened the second half on a 6-2 run before a jumper from Agboola halted its momentum. Moran connected on a 3-pointer at the 14:21 mark to give the Terriers their largest lead of the game 57-22.
The Knights followed with a 10-0 run but a jumper from Sims pushed BU's lead to 59-32 with 11:06 to play. Agboola brought the Terriers lead back to 30 points with a pair of free throws and the Knights came as close as 22 points, 64-42, with 2:55 to play. The Terriers closed out the game with a pair of free throws from Melissa Gallo and a layup from Agboola to capture the 68-42 victory.
BU plays its final non-conference opponent of the season tomorrow in day two of the Christmas City Classic when the Terriers take on host Lehigh. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. at Stabler Arena.
