BOSTON - Four players reached double figures as the Boston University women's basketball team (14-11, 10-3 AE) completed its regular-season sweep of Stony Brook (8-18, 6-8 AE) with a 69-59 victory on Wednesday night at Agganis Arena. Freshman Chantell Alford led the way with 15 points, while senior Aly Hinton added 14 and sophomore Alex Young and freshman Caitlynn Moran each chipped in 13.

Alford earned BU's America East Player of the Game honor after going 5-for-8 from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc. She brought down seven boards with three assists, one block and two steals. Hinton hit four of her nine attempts, including a crucial trey with 1:09 remaining to make it a seven-point game. Hinton and sophomore Caroline Stewart each brought down nine boards in the victory, while sophomore Kerry Cashman swatted a game-high three shots. Moran, who was 4-for-13, dished out a game-high four assists.

As a team, BU shot 41.1 percent from the field and took it to Stony Brook with nine made threes, while holding the Seawolves to just three treys in the contest. SBU won the battle of the boards, 51-41.

Stony Brook's fullcourt press frustrated the Terriers' offensive to begin the game, causing a handful of turnovers in the backcourt in the first few minutes of the game. SBU went on to take an early 11-8 advantage and stretched it to as much as eight, 18-10, at 10:33 in the first.

A resilient Terriers' side did not relent, however, and went on to reclaim the lead at 6:57 when Hinton hit the front end of her two free throw attempts. Throughout the remainder of the half the Terriers outscored Stony Brook, 25-7, as it held a 35-25 lead at the break.

In the second half, Stony Brook would not go quietly as it methodically chipped away at the lead and brought it to a mere four points at 14:32 when SBU's Kirsten Jeter hit a mid-range jumper to move the score to 42-38. The Terriers responded by quickly pushing the lead back to as much as 13, 55-42, backed by a 13-4 run that stretched eight minutes.

However, by the 2:44 mark, Stony Brook again made it a two-possession game, 61-57. Hinton came through with a clutch 3-pointer at 1:09 and in the final minute BU hit five free throws to cap off the 10-point victory.

BU will travel to Hartford on Sunday (Feb. 21) to take on the Hawks at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast locally in West Hartford, Conn., on CTSN.
