Rick Edelmann

  • Title
    Men's Tennis Head Coach

Rick Edelmann enters his sixth year as the head coach of the men[apos]s tennis program, as the Terriers begin their first season in the Patriot League.

The program has continued to develop under his watch and is looking to build off the momentum from the 2012-13 season in which the Terriers swept five opponents. They finished with a 7-6 record for the team[apos]s first winning season since 2007. Highlights of the season included 7-0 wins against Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart and Holy Cross.

BU[apos]s performance helped Edelmann land the Terriers[apos] first-ever four-star recruit using the rating system provided by TennisRecruiting.net since 2004.

During the 2011-12 season, Josh Friedman earned 2012 America East All-Conference Second Team honors in singles and doubles with classmate Michael Kopelman. One of Friedman[apos]s highlights included an impressive win against Harvard[apos]s Jon Pearlman, a two-time All-Ivy League First Team honoree.

BU finished with a 6-14 record but was only blanked twice and earned key victories against Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac. The Terriers also earned a point against two ranked squads, No. 58 St. John[apos]s and No. 60 Harvard. A three-star recruit from Key Biscayne Fla., Emilio Teran showed his future is bright by winning the B Flight title at the Quinnipiac Invitational and finishing the year with a 16-8 singles record.

The 2010-11 season proved to be a major step forward with a recruiting class that received votes in the top-25 mid-major poll run by TennisRecruiting.net. BU posted a 10-11 record, matching the same amount of wins from the previous two years combined. Edelmann was named Co-America East Coach of the Year for his efforts, as the Terriers defeated Villanova and defending Northeast champion Sacred Heart along the way.

In 2009-10, BU went 6-14 with victories over Siena, Bryant, Holy Cross, Hofstra and Hartford (twice). The squad was only shut out twice after being blanked seven times the previous year.

During his first season at the helm, BU posted a record of 4-17 with four of the losses being decided by one point. The Terriers reached the semifinals of the America East tournament with a 7-0 sweep over Hartford before falling to No. 1 seed Stony Brook.

In the Fall of 2008, he joined the Terriers with 20 years of head-coaching experience overseeing intercollegiate tennis programs at three institutions - Amherst and Merrimack colleges and Florida Tech.

The 2007 New England Small College Athletic Conference men[apos]s tennis coach of the year at Amherst, Edelmann also was named the Northeast 10 Conference coach of the year in 1992, 1995 and 1999.

Edelmann oversaw Amherst College[apos]s men[apos]s program from January 2005 to June 2007, during which time he led the Lord Jeffs to the round of 16 in the NCAA Division III Tournament three consecutive years. Two of his players were named all-Americans during his tenure.

From January 2003 until July 2004, he oversaw both the men[apos]s and women[apos]s programs at Florida Tech as the director of tennis, a role he previously held at Merrimack for two-and-one-half years in conjunction with being an Assistant Director of Athletics. One of his former players at Tech is a Davis Cup participant for Aruba (2008, 2009).

Edelmann was the head coach at Merrimack from 1989 through 2000, and also has worked as the head tennis professional at Indian Ridge Country Club, Salem Country Club and Rolling Green Tennis Club.

Edelmann served on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association[apos]s Division III Ranking Committee beginning in 2006 and worked previously on the Division II East Regional Ranking Committee from 1997 through 2003.

A four-year varsity athlete and team captain his senior year, Edelmann graduated from Saint Michael[apos]s College with a bachelor of science degree in business administration in May 1987.

A native of Groveland, Mass., he resides in Boxford.
