BOSTON – Junior
Giulianna Gianino potted her third goal of the young season in the 36th minute, supplying the offense in the Boston University women's soccer team's 1-1 draw against Northeastern on Sunday evening at Nickerson Field.
BU (0-1-1) got on the scoreboard on a free kick from the junior, but Northeastern (0-0-1) responded in the 67th minute when Jessie Hunt buried a rebound after senior goalkeeper
Celia Braun stopped her penalty kick.
Gianino (four shots), freshman
Jaiden Schultz (three shots), and graduate student
Lily Matthews (two shots) fired multiple targets, while Braun collected two saves in net.
Hunt, Megan Putvinski, and Avery LeVangie each had two shots to pace the Huskies. Netminder Eilza Teplow came up with five saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Matthews rattled off the game's first shot in the ninth minute, but it was blocked in front by a Northeastern defender.
- In the 22nd minute, Schultz fended off her marker to go inside 12 yards for a shot, but Teplow made the stop.
- Teplow continued to keep the Terriers off the scoreboard in the 28th minute, sprawling to her left on Gianino's bouncing shot to bat it away from the right post. The Huskies then cleared BU's ensuing corner.
- The Terriers earned a free kick in the 36th minute after multiple student-athletes got tangled up at the top of the box. Taking the free kick, Gianino zipped it past Teplow and into the lower-left corner of the goal.
- Northeastern increased the pressure out of halftime. After Teplow snared Schultz's header, Putvinski raced in near the top-left of the 18-yard box, forcing Braun to come out and deny her shot. Moments later, in the 51st minute, LeVangie's shot went narrowly wide right of the goal.
- The Huskies earned a penalty kick in the 67th minute, with Hunt taking the shot. Braun went right and batted down the shot, but Hunt cleaned up the rebound with a goal towards the lower-right of the net.
- Schultz and senior Morgan Fagan had consecutive shots blocked in the 77th minute.
- Junior Shayla Brown worked free near the right of the six-yard box in the 86th minute, but her blast was deflected by a Northeastern defender right as she made contact, sending the ball wide. The Huskies went on to clear the Terrier corner kick.
