Wagner Edges Men's Basketball on Buzzer Beater, 60-58

BOSTON – Concluding a two-game homestand, the Boston University men's basketball team came up just short to defending NEC champion Wagner, 60-58, on Tuesday night at Case Gym.

The Seahawks (2-3) tied the game on a layup with 0.6 seconds remaining and then took advantage of an errant inbounds pass that failed to touch any of the players to strike again on a buzzer beater under the hoop against the Terriers (1-4).

Sophomore Kyrone Alexander led BU with 12 points and six rebounds, while junior Nico Nobili posted 11 points and seven rebounds. Senior Ben Palacios was the third Terrier with double figures at 10 points, while classmate Malcolm Chimezie helped BU win the battle at the boards, 38-34, thanks to a game-high eight rebounds alongside two blocks.

RJ Greene came off the bench for Wagner with a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds, while Zaire Williams totaled 18 points, three assists and five steals. Javier Ezquerra was the third Seahawk in double figures with 10 points alongside six assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Wagner grabbed an early 4-2 lead at 17:52 off a layup, the Terriers responded with a 14-6 run that included 3-pointers from junior Nico Nobili and sophomore Michael McNair to move ahead, 16-8, at 8:58.
  • The teams went back-and-forth the rest of the half with BU headed to the locker room with a 25-20 lead.
  • Alexander briefly gave BU a double-digit lead, 38-28, with a short jumper and bonus free throw at 14:13.
  • Ten minutes later, Nobili hit a pair of free throws for a 52-44 advantage, but the Seahawks responded with two of their own free throws, a defensive stop and 3-pointer.
  • After Palacios drove to the hoop for a 57-54 lead with 1:09 remaining, Chimezie blocked the ensuing Wagner shot attempt, Greene was able to score on Kelton's offensive rebound to pull within one.
  • The teams then exchanged defensive stops with BU drawing a foul with eight seconds remaining in regulation.
  • The Terriers though went 1-of-4 from the charity stripe following an offensive rebound on the initial second free throw attempt.
  • Wagner moved the ball to midcourt and called a time out to set up Greene's successful drive to the paint and a tied game at 0.6 seconds.
  • Trying to get off a miracle shot, BU over threw the inbounds pass, which led to the Seahawks regaining possession under the hoop with 0.6 seconds.
  • Wagner found Greene underneath and he beat the clock with a quick shot off the glass for the victory.
GAME NOTES
  • Junior Ben Roy dished out a season-high four assists and earned three steals as well.
  • BU shot 50 percent from the field during the second half but only went 12-of-20 (.600) from the charity stripe, while the Seahawks shot 46.7 FG% and 8-of-11 (.727) at the free throw line.
  • Wagner outscored BU in the paint, 26-12, and off turnovers, 21-15, to improve to 5-3 all-time in the series.
UP NEXT
  • BU will fly south to Baltimore, Maryland for a pair of games at the UMBC Multi-Team Event this upcoming weekend (Nov. 23-24).
