BOSTON – Helped by a late goal in both halves and a pair of saves, the Boston University men's soccer team started Patriot League play with a 2-0 home win over Lehigh Saturday night.
Extending their unbeaten streak at Nickerson Field to seven contests (6-0-1), the Terriers are now 4-2-0 on the year, while the Mountain Hawks drop to 0-4-2 behind their second shutout loss.
Sophomore
Alex Bonnington delivered the game-winning goal in the 44th minute and senior
Eitan Rosen tallied the insurance score during the 89th minute, as both sophomore
John Roman and senior
Aidan Bone earned their first career assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Graduate student Quinn Matulis took the game's first shot attempt at 10:06, but Lehigh's backline blocked it away.
- The Mountain Hawks came back with a pair of shots of their own a minute later, including Hassane Diakho's header, that went wide.
- Senior Francesco Montali earned his first save at 23:21 by smothering a 25-yard attempt from Thomas Robertson.
- After helping BU clear a pair of Lehigh corner kicks, Roman swiped the ball away from the Mountain Hawks in the 44th minute and directed a hard grounder off Bonnington that went inside the far post for the 1-0 advantage.
- Junior Daniel Kim nearly doubled the lead seven minutes into the second stanza by trying to lift the ball over Blake Koski but the keeper's outstretched arms deflected it out of bounds.
- Montali caught a header from Diakho following a free kick to maintain the 1-0 lead at 53:01.
- BU dominated possession the rest of the contest, earning three corners between the 67th and 71st minutes.
- After both Rosen and senior Andrew Rent sailed the ball over the crossbar, freshman Jason Zacrias forced a save at 82:50.
- In the final minute, BU put the game away, as Bone collected a loose ball and fed it to a running Rosen for a quick shot inside the right post.
