Field Hockey Falls to No. 5 Iowa, 4-0

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Boston University field hockey team dropped a 4-0 contest at No. 5 Iowa on Friday afternoon at Grant Field. The Terriers move to 1-2 on the season while the Hawkeyes improve to 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The opening quarter did not produce a shot on goal as the teams entered the second quarter scoreless.
  • The first corner of the game was earned by the Hawkeyes early in the second but the Terrier defense was able to block the ensuing shot.
  • Iowa opened in the scoring at the 21:02 mark when Alex Wesneski scored her first of two goals on the day by deflecting a cross from Lieve Schalk.
  • The home team was able to take a 2-0 lead into the half thanks to a corner goal by Sofie Stribos in the 28th minute with assists from Annika Herbine and Anthe Nijziel.
  • There were two corners in the third quarter and BU had both of them but the visitors were unable to cut into the deficit.
  • Iowa pushed its lead to 3-0 at 42:18 when Herbine converted a breakaway.
  • The Hawkeyes tacked on one more goal in the four as Wesneski found the top left corner following a pass from Jacey Wittel in the 51st minute. 
GAME NOTES
  • Iowa held a slim 4-2 edge in corners.
  • Senior goalkeeper Caroline Kelly stopped two of the four shots on goal she faced in the first half before junior Kate Thomason made three saves on six shots in the latter half.
  • Iowa netminder Grace McGuire made one save to earn the shutout.
UP NEXT
  • The Terriers will return to action on Saturday (Sept. 3) when they take on Saint Louis in a neutral-site contest at Grant Field.
  • Game time is set for 2 p.m. ET.
