Strong Backline Effort, Late Lee Goal Propel Men's Soccer to 1-0 Win at No. 9 New Hampshire

DURHAM, N.H. – Led by senior Ryan Lee's 78th-minute strike and a stellar defensive effort that cleared 18 corner kicks, the Boston University men's soccer team stunned No. 9 New Hampshire, 1-0, on Sunday evening at Wildcat Stadium.

With their biggest win utilizing the United Soccer Coaches poll since a 1-0 home victory over then-No. 4 St. John's in 2009, the Terriers improve to 1-0-1 for their best start to a season since opening 2-0-0 in 2014. Coming off a Round of 16 appearance in the 2021 NCAA tournament, UNH (0-2-0) fell to 43-3-7 all-time at Wildcat Stadium with a 109-20 advantage in goals scored after suffering its first home regular season loss since 2016.

Senior Francesco Montali posted five saves for BU's first shutout of the season, while Jassem Koleilat recorded two for UNH in defeat following Thursday's 2-1 loss at No. 20 Maryland.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Montali made his first save in the sixth minute as he got in position to catch a hard shot from Paul Mayer.
  • Senior Quinn Matulis recorded BU's first shot attempt at 13:06.
  • UNH followed a corner kick at 29:51 with two shots and another corner kick, but BU was able to keep the game scoreless with a gritty effort.
  • Montali added another save eight minutes.
  • Facing an 11-1 deficit in shots entering the locker room, BU forced the second half's first save when senior Gianluca Arlotti tried to fire a low grounder inside the near post at 56:19.
  • Freshman Diego Rived headed a high ball up the field, and Lee made a strong run through the backline to scoop up the ball and fire a shot at the far post for the 1-0 lead.
  • UNH recorded five shots over the last seven minutes with one hitting the crossbar at 83:54 and another getting stopped by Montali following the ensuing corner kick.
