Terriers Fall 5-4 in Close Battle With Boston College

BOSTON – Despite a rally of three unanswered goals late in the third period, the Terriers fell to Boston College, 5-4, at Walter Brown Arena on Saturday.

Senior Julia Nearis provided a highlight-reel goal when she went between her legs and roofed a shot past BC goaltender Grace Campbell to cut BC's lead to 2-1 in the first period. She was assisted by freshman Brooke Disher and junior Lacey Martin. The Eagles went on to score two more goals in the first and added another in the second before the Terriers fought back in the third. In under three minutes, BU broke down BC's lead goal-by-goal.

Senior Nadia Mattivi recorded BU's second goal of the game with assists from senior Brooke Ersoy and junior Catherine Foulem. Mattivi's goal ignited the fire for BU as senior Julia Shaunessy found the back of the net with help from Andi Calderone for a power-play goal. The electric three-minute span was capped off when freshman Clara Yuhn made it a one-goal game with 6:57 to go in the period. Grad student Alex Allan and sophomore Christina Vote set up the pass for Yuhn to close out the scoring and decrease BC's lead to 5-4.

At the close of the weekend series, BU sits at 2-4-0 overall and 1-3-0 in Hockey East play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BC opened the scoring just 62 seconds into the first and followed that up with another goal at 2:20.
  • At 14:06, a BU penalty on Haylee Blinkhorn for body checking and a BC penalty for embellishment set up a 4-on-4 scenario on the ice.
  • The Terriers were able to capitalize on the chance when Nearis lit the lamp for BU to close the gap, 2-1.
  • BC picked up two more goals late in the first to extend their lead to 4-1.
  • The second frame featured three successful penalty kills from the Terriers but BC found the back of the net once more to record what would be the game-winning goal and a 5-1 lead.
  • Mattivi scored her second goal of the season at the 10:10 mark in the final period with a shot from the left point to start the late run.
  • After BC went to the box for interference, Shaunessy recorded her first goal of the season on the power-play chance with a tip-in from from the middle of the slot 52 second after the Mattivi goal.
  • At 13:02, Yuhn closed out the scoring just two minutes and one second after Shaunessy's goal with a perfect redirect that went in between Campbell's legs.
