WEST POINT, N.Y. – Looking to carry momentum from a 79-53 win at American, the Boston University men's basketball team will conclude its two-game road trip at Army West Point Thursday night with tip-off slated for 6 p.m.
The Terriers claimed their second wire-to-wire victory of the season against the Eagles and will face an Army squad that is 6-1 at home. The Black Knights started conference play 3-0 before dropping a 76-57 decision at Colgate on Monday.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU is 4-4 in true road games following earlier victories at Hartford (75-70), George Washington (56-54) and Dartmouth (65-62).
- Helped by a pair of double-doubles from graduate student Sukhmail Mathon (14.4 ppg, 9.7 rpg) and senior Walter Whyte (12.9 ppg, 6.9 rpg), the Terriers posted a 44-29 advantage in rebounds against the Eagles to move up to No. 69 nationally in rebound margin (4.9 rpg).
- Mathon currently ranks 15th nationally in double-doubles (7) and 21st in rebounds while also ranking sixth in made free throws (80) thanks to a 78.4 FT shooting percentage.
- Graduate student Javante McCoy tallied 25 points on Monday to increase his scoring average to a personal-best 17.2 ppg.
- Senior Jonas Harper is fourth on the team at 8.4 ppg, while classmate Fletcher Tynen is third in rebounding at 4.2 rpg.
- Overall, the Terriers are averaging 68.8 ppg and 43.8 FG% while holding teams to 64.5 ppg and 43.9 FG%.
SCOUTING ARMY WEST POINT
- The Black Knights shared three non-conference opponents with BU, posting a 74-51 home win against Merrimack and 65-61 victory vs. Marist. Army also earned an 86-79 win against Hartford in North Carolina.
- 5-foot-10 guard Jalen Rucker leads Army at 15.5 ppg while averaging 7.5 3-point attempts. 6-foot-2 guard Josh Caldwell is second at 12.9 ppg and has combined with Rucker for 9.3 rpg.
- 6-foot-9 forward Charlie Peterson leads Army at 6.5 rpg while averaging 8.5 ppg.
- The Black Knights are averaging 72.3 ppg and 43.9 FG% while holding opponents to 70.2 ppg and 42.7 FG%. They rank 57th nationally in steals at 8.2 spg.
SERIES HISTORY
- The Terriers are 20-14 all-time in the series that dates back to 1954.
- BU and Army were placed in the same division last season to help limit travel. Both teams hosted two-game weekend series.
- The Terriers wrapped the 2020-21 regular season at Army, first earning a 75-63 victory and then coming up just short in the finale, 57-55.
