BOSTON - Freshman goalkeeper
Celia Braun made a career-high five saves, but the Boston University women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback to Coglate on Wednesday night at Nickerson Field.
BU (4-5-1, 1-1-0 PL) and Colgate (5-4-0, 1-1-0 PL) were deadlocked at the break, but the Raiders capitalized on a free kick early in the second half and held on for the victory. All five of Braun's saves came in the second half. Junior
Gretchen Bennett made two saves in the opening 45 minutes.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- All three shots on target in the first half came within the first 15 minutes.
- Bennett's first stop came on a slow roller that she easily gathered in the seventh minute.
- Grace Poncsak (three saves) turned aside sophomore Lily Matthews' attempt from distance in the 10th minute.
- Bennett then stretched out to deny Sara Anelli in the 15th minute to keep the game scoreless.
- BU earned two corners late in the first half but neither of the ensuing shot attempts ended up on target.
- The Raiders struck first in the 54th minute when Hannah Pinkus headed home a free kick.
- Junior Julianna Stureman forced a save in the 63rd minute when her ambitious effort from distance was pushed over the bar by Poncsak.
- BU had a golden chance with less than 24 minutes to play. Sophomore Abigail McNulty played a sensational ball from her own half of the field to freshman Morgan Fagan, who made a terrific run behind the Raider defense. Fagan sent her shot wide to the right, however, and Colgate remained in the lead.
- Braun made a pair of stops to keep the deficit at 1-0, including a fantastic save on Nicolle Apuzzi in the 76th minute on a close-range strike following a corner kick.
- The Terriers continued to press for an equalizer but were unable to secure the tying goal.
