ANNAPOLIS, Md. – For the fifth time in eight seasons, the Boston University women's tennis team captured the Patriot League Tournament title, defeating Navy 4-3 Sunday afternoon in a hostile environment at the Midshipmen's Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium.
Freshman
Kaitlin Tan was named the Patriot League Tournament MVP after winning in straight sets in all three singles matches. With their ninth straight victory, the Terriers booked their 18th NCAA Tournament berth and first since 2017. BU will await its destination as the NCAA selection show is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday.
Navy (7-4) took the doubles point for the early 1-0 lead, but BU (10-1) rallied back with straight-set wins in the top three singles slots. Senior and two-time captain
Lily Burchell clinched the match at No. 5 singles in straight sets as well to help head coach and Terrier alum
Lesley Sheehan claim her 27th overall conference title at BU.
Tan earned the first singles win, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot and sophomore
Erica Di Battista followed right after with a 6-2, 6-4 outcome at the No. 3 position to even the score at 2-all.
Freshman
Victoria Carlsten worked for a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 1, giving the Terriers a 3-2 edge. Needing one last point, Burchell secured the championship with scores of 7-6(4), 6-3 at No. 5.
