BOSTON – Continuing its title defense, the seventh-seeded Boston University men's basketball team will visit No. 2 Colgate Saturday afternoon for the quarterfinal round of the 2021 PenFed Credit Union Patriot League Men's Basketball Tournament. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+ and
GoTerriers.com/tsrn.
With Wednesday's 69-58 first-round victory over Lehigh, the Terriers are now on an active four-game win streak in conference tournament games, their longest such run since winning five straight spanning the 2002 and 2003 America East tournaments. Overall, BU is 25-14 (.614) all-time in quarterfinal rounds following last year's 69-63 home victory over Navy. This will be the program's third straight season visiting Hamilton, New York, after the Terriers dropped an 81-69 quarterfinal decision in 2019 and won the 2020 championship, 64-61.
Four of the five starters from last year's title victory are back for head coach
Joe Jones. Senior
Javante McCoy posted 11 points and seven assists in that win over the Raiders to earn a spot on the 2020 All-Tournament Team. He currently leads BU at 15.4 ppg to move up to No. 15 all-time in the program record book with 1,294 points. Senior
Sukhmail Mathon owns a team-high 7.9 rpg while averaging 11.1 ppg, and junior
Walter Whyte is second in both points (13.6 ppg) and rebounds (6.9 rpg). Junior
Jonas Harper previously had a personal-best seven rebounds in the title victory before hauling in a game-high nine rebounds on Wednesday against the Mountain Hawks. He's averaging 8.0 ppg and 3.1 rpg with a team-high 22 3-pointers in 14 appearances. As a team, BU is averaging 69.4 ppg and 43.8 FG% while holding opponents to 73.8 ppg and 47.3 FG%.
The Terriers face a difficult task in trying to advance, as the Raiders are averaging 85.7 ppg and 49.7 FG% this season while holding opponents to 67.8 ppg and 40.0 FG%. 2021 Patriot League Player of the Year Jordan Burns leads Colgate at 17.1 ppg, 5.6 apg and 1.7 spg. He had 21 points in last year's title game but like the rest of his teammates, struggled mightily behind the arc with Colgate finishing at a season-low four 3-pointers on 22 attempts against BU's pressuring defense. Jack Ferguson will try to correct that issue in this matchup, shooting an impressive 48.2 3FG% en route to 12.1 ppg. Both Nelly Cummings (13.0 ppg) and Tucker Richardson (11.0 ppg) are averaging double figures with Keegan Records (8.3 ppg) owning a team-high 7.0 rpg.
BU leads the all-time series, 29-28, that dates back to 1933-34 after Colgate won all four regular-season matchups. The advancing team will next face either No. 3 Lafayette or No. 6 Bucknell at the site of the higher seed remaining on Wednesday (March 10) with the start time still to be determined.
