Women's Tennis Opens Season with 7-0 Victory over Rhode Island

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Boston University women's tennis team opened the 2021 spring campaign at the International Tennis Hall of Fame with a 7-0 sweep over Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon.

Seeing their first action in 356 days, the Terriers won two of the three doubles matches for the first point and then captured all six singles points, including four in straight sets, to blank the Rams (0-1) for the second consecutive season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore Sofia Kostirko and freshman Kaitlin Tan cruised to a 6-0 win at line 3 in doubles, but the Rams put the point up for grabs by posting a 6-2 victory in the No. 2 slot.
  • Senior Lily Burchell and freshman Victoria Carlsten broke late to edge 2019 Atlantic-10 All-Conference honoree Erin Chratian and Halah Davis, 7-5, for the first point.
  • Tan rolled past Chratian in the No. 2 singles match for the 6-3, 6-2 victory, while fellow classmate Carlsten dispatched Davis at line 3, 6-2, 7-5.
  • Burchell won 12 of 13 games at line 5, while senior Alex Angyalosy won 12 of 14 in the No. 6 slot.
  • Playing in the top match for the 15th time in her career, Kim prevailed over URI's Nadia Rajan, 6-3, 3-6, 11-9.
  • Katya Martens rallied from a set down to complete the sweep at line 4 with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory.
NEXT UP: BOSTON COLLEGE
