Women's Soccer Posts 1-1 Draw With Loyola

Fagan Nets First-Half Equalizer To Keep Terriers Atop Table

BOSTON - Freshman Morgan Fagan netted her third goal of the season less than seven minutes after Loyola broke the scoreless tie to lead to a 1-1 draw between the Terriers and the Greyhounds on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

Fagan equalized the game in the 36th minute when senior Amy Thompson fed her inside the box. The rookie shook off a Greyhound defender and beat keeper Paige Sim to knot the game at one. Though BU (9-5-3, 5-1-2 PL) outshot Loyola (7-5-4, 4-1-3 PL) 12-5 after halftime, neither side found the back of the net, leading to the Terriers' second consecutive tie.

The match featured the top two teams in the Patriot League table heading into the day. With the result, BU maintains its first-place standing with 17 points ahead of the final regular game in league play, while Loyola now sports 15 points. Navy won earlier in the afternoon to vault into second place with 16 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Greyhounds wasted no time generating offense as Sarah Mirr placed a shot on BU's starting netminder, freshman Celia Braun, 42 seconds in. Braun made the easy save.
  • BU followed with multiple corner kicks in the next two minutes, but it did not lead to a shot. In the 12th minute, sophomore Abigail McNulty's flick clanged off the right post.
  • Loyola ignited the scoring in the 30th minute. After BU threatened in the attacking zone, the Greyhounds secured the turnover. Baylee DeSmit raced from one end to the other, weaving her way by a defender and burying the lefty shot past Braun.
  • Following Fagan's goal, each team had one chance before halftime, but both shots sailed high.
  • The Terriers raced out of the break with three shots in the first 11 minutes. McNulty and junior Ashley Buck had chances blocked, with the latter leading to an unsuccessful corner kick.
  • Starting the second half between the posts, junior Gretchen Bennett made her first save Kaleigh Gallagher's shot in the 58th minute.
  • In the 64th minute, sophomore Kiley Bertos almost put BU ahead, but Sim came out of the net to make a sliding save just as Bertos made contact with the ball.
  • Sim made another stop on Fagan's attempt for a brace in the 77th minute, then denied McNulty five minutes later.
  • Loyola pressured in the first overtime with two DeSmit shots, but Bennett was able to secure both without issue. Those were the only shots for both sides in the first extra frame.
  • BU had two prime moments to seal the game with less than four minutes to go, but Bertos' header off a Jenna Oldham corner kick was redirected on the end line, then Sim made a diving stop on McNulty's blast with under a minute to play.
