Late Goals Lift No. 23 Terriers to Thrilling Comeback Win over Northeastern

BOSTON - In one of the most thrilling games ever played on New Balance Field, the No. 23 Boston University field hockey team scored goals a minute apart late in regulation on Sunday afternoon to earn a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over crosstown rival Northeastern.

Junior Ailsa Connolly scored the winner with 1:04 left to play after freshman Jodie Conolly tied it up exactly a minute earlier.

Senior co-captain Kiley Gallagher had a goal and assisted on freshman Mikayla Crowley's first collegiate goal. Junior Miya Denison notched her first goal of the year at the end of the third quarter to keep BU in the game.

The Terriers handed Northeastern their first loss of the season to complete a two-win home weekend and improve to 3-1 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU took a 2-1 lead when Crowley redirected a Gallagher shot near the right post in the 27th minute.
  • Northeastern rallied with three consecutive goals, starting with a give-and-go off a corner in the final minute of the opening half to make it a 2-2 contest at the break.
  • Alli Meehan scored her second goal of the game just 1:36 into the latter half to give the visitors a 3-2 lead.
  • The Huskies doubled their lead in the 41st minute when Kasidy Anderson sprung free on a breakaway and got around BU netminder Caroline Kelly on the left side before depositing the ball.
  • The Terriers responded with a three-goal run of their own to put together an incredible comeback.
  • Off a BU corner, NU goalkeeper Julia Gluyas made three straight saves before Dension finally solved her to get the Terriers within one at 4-3 just over a minute after the Huskies' fourth goal.
  • BU recorded just two shots in the final quarter but they both found the back of the cage.
  • The Terriers pulled Kelly in favor of an extra field player with just over five minutes left in regulation.
  • With no goalie behind her, junior Paige Mautner came up with a diving defensive save to push the ball wide of the cage and keep the Terriers in the contest.
  • BU got the ball down to its offensive end before earning what was its only corner of the final quarter.
  • Conolly executed a perfect drag flick to the top right corner with 2:04 left in the contest as junior Kathryn Scheerer and Connolly picked up assists on the game-tying tally.
  • Moments later, the Terriers forced a turnover in the midfield and created space for junior Liz Ryan to attack along the right side.
  • Ryan sent the ball towards the far post, where Conolly got a touch on it and then slid it between her legs and in with 64 ticks left on the clock.
  • BU got on the board first when freshman Ellie McIntyre corralled a loose ball and sent it towards the cage in the sixth minute.
  • The ball deflected off an NU defender's stick right to Gallagher, who quickly knocked it past Gluyas for a 1-0 lead.
  • Meehan popped the ball over Kelly at the right post with under two minutes left in the first quarter to knot the score.
GAME NOTES
  • Each team had seven corners with the Terriers scoring on three of theirs.
  • The Huskies held a slim 16-15 advantage in shots.
  • Gluyas and Kelly each made four saves.
  • This was the first time since Sept. 28, 2001, at Delaware (5-4 OT win) that BU won when allowing four goals and erasing a two-goal deficit.
UP NEXT
  • The Terriers will head north for a pair of games next weekend at Maine.
  • BU will face Maine on Friday (Sept. 13) at 3 p.m. before taking on Columbia the following day in a neutral-site contest that will begin at at 2 p.m.
