Terriers Suffer 78-55 Setback to Northern Colorado in Cancun Challenge Bracket Opener

CANCUN, Mexico – Competing outside the continental United States in a regular season game for the first time in a decade, the Boston University men's basketball team fell to Northern Colorado, 78-55, on Tuesday afternoon at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya as part of the 12th annual Cancun Challenge.
 
The Bears (3-3) shot 53.6 percent from the field and posted a 40-23 advantage in rebounds to advance to Wednesday's Mayan Division title game against Gardner-Webb. Held to 38.6 FG%, the Terriers (3-4) will meet Tennessee-Martin in the consolation game.
 
2019 Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year Jonah Radebaugh led UNC with 25 points (5-of-5 3FG), eight rebounds and five assists, while 2019 Big Sky Freshman of the Year Bodie Hume had 15 points with the help of three 3-pointers. Senior Max Mahoney (16 pts.) was joined by sophomore Alex Vilarino (13 pts.) in double figures for the Terriers.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vilarino opened with a jumper and added a 3-pointer during a game-opening 9-4 spurt capped by Mahoney's short jumper at 16:13.
  • The Bears responded with a 16-5 run over the next six minutes with both Radebaugh and Hume hitting 3-pointers.
  • Junior Javante McCoy hit a jumper at 6:37 to put the deficit at 24-20.
  • Sparked by Matt Johnson's 3-pointer, the Bears finished the half on a 17-5 run and extended it to 26-6 into the second half.
  • The Terriers went 1-of-13 at one point during the game-changing stretch.
  • UNC shot 56.5 FG% in the second while holding the Terriers to 35.5 FG% to build the lead to as large as 28 (71-43) with 4:18 remaining.
GAME NOTES
  • Senior Adam Mikula scored his first career five points with a jumper and 3-pointer on BU's final two possessions of the game.
  • Mahoney had five rebounds, and junior Sukhmail Mathon added four.
  • The teams were tied in points in the paint at 34-34 with the Terriers outscoring UNC off turnovers, 14-7.
  • The Bears entered the game averaging 10 made 3-pointers and finished 11-of-21 (.524) against BU's 3-of-13 (.231) performance.
  • Kai Edwards had 10 points and 12 rebounds off the bench for UNC.
  • The matchup marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs. 
NEXT UP: TENNESSEE-MARTIN
  • The Terriers will face off against the Skyhawks at 12:30 p.m. in the consolation round of the Mayan Division after UT Martin fell to Gardner-Webb in the earlier matchup, 81-65.
  • BU edged UT Martin, 67-64, in the only meeting between the two programs at a 1991 tournament hosted by the University of Indiana.
