Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Falls at Bucknell, 3-0

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Seeing its three-game win streak snapped, the Boston University men's soccer team fell at Bucknell, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon.

The Bison (5-5-3, 2-2-2 PL) struck first in the 23rd minute and then took advantage of a controversial no-call in the 76th minute to help put away the Terriers (3-10-1, 2-4-0 PL) in the first-ever meeting between the two programs to end in regulation. The result moves Bucknell to fifth in the Patriot League standings at eight points with No. 6 American (7 pts.) and No. 7 BU (6 pts.) looming behind. Only three games remain, and just the top six teams advance to the conference tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bucknell attempted the game's first three shots with junior MIchael Stone making a save at 15:39.
  • Sophomore Kari Petursson fired a shot at the lower left corner, but Luke Smith was in position to make the stop at 19:56.
  • In the 23rd minute, Matt Thorsheim hit the crossbar from inside the top of the box, and Patrick O'Hara put the rebound away past a diving Stone for the 1-0 advantage.
  • BU had two more shots and pressured the Bucknell backline in the final minute of the half but still entered the locker room facing a one-goal deficit.
  • Stone made two more saves in the first 12 minutes of the second half.
  • The Terriers had a corner and multiple dangerous crosses but were unable to get off a shot attempt before the Bison struck again.
  • As Bucknell pressured BU's backline, O'Hara lofted a quick pass to Kevin Gulizio, who seemingly used the right side of his arm to knock the ball down to the ground and then get around a defender to set up a hard shot at the lower left post for the 2-0 advantage.
  • The BU bench argued for a hand ball and received its first yellow card of the season in return.
  • The Terriers went on the attack with five shots and a corner but were unable to find the back of the net.
  • Only shut out once this season, Bucknell added a third goal in the 88th minute.
GAME NOTES
  • Freshman Jorge Lopez Lacu led the Terriers with three shot attempts, as Bucknell finished with a 12-9 advantage.
  • BU leading scorer Matt McDonnell (seven goals) missed his first game of the season after having to leave early in Tuesday's win against Harvard.
  • Stone earned four saves, while Smith had two for the Bison.
  • The Bison won for the first time since 2014 to avenge last year's 2-1 OT loss and improved to 3-1-5 all-time.
NEXT UP: #22 Navy
  • The Terriers will return home to host the currently No. 22 nationally-ranked Midshipmen Saturday (Oct. 26) at 1 p.m.
  • The annual alumni game will take place at 10 a.m.
  • BU has won its last three meetings at Nickerson Field against Navy but fell in Annapolis last season, 2-1.
