Top-Seed Bucknell Eliminates Men's Basketball in PL Semfinals, 90-59

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The collegiate careers of four seniors came to an end Sunday afternoon, as defending Patriot League champion and top-seed Bucknell eliminated the Boston University men's basketball team, 90-59, in the semifinals at Sojka Pavilion.

Featuring three 2018 All-PL First Team honorees with an RPI ranking of 85, the Bison improved to 24-9 overall and 14-1 at home this season, while the No. 5-seed Terriers, owner of the lone win in Lewisburg, ended their year at 15-16.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bucknell scored the game's first eight points with sophomore Tyler Scanlon finally putting BU on the board at 16:09 on a jumper.
  • A Kimbal Mackenzie 3-pointer and Nana Foulland jumper pushed Bucknell's lead to 15-2 at 13:08.
  • The Bison led by 13+ for the rest of the half, eventually eclipsing 20 at 2:55 (40-19) on Stephen Brown's 3-pointer.
  • Scanlon scored the final bucket of the half, as the teams entered the locker room with Bucknell leading, 46-23.
  • Trying to mount a rally, sophomore Max Mahoney scored the first bucket of the second half, and freshman Javante McCoy later cut the deficit to 21 at 17:32 (50-29) and 16:49 (52-31), respectively.
  • On the ensuing possession though, Avi Toomer flushed a 3-pointer to spark a 16-5 run and help the Bison roll to victory.
  • Bucknell outscored BU in the second half, 44-36, by shooting 65.2 percent during the final 20 minutes.
GAME NOTES
  • Senior Cedric Hankerson went 3-of-8 for eight points with a steal to end his career 13th all-time at BU with 1,299 points, fourth in 3-pointers (235) and fourth in steals (177).
  • Limited to seven minutes due to foul trouble, the All-PL Third Team member Mahoney went 1-of-6 for two points to finish the season 163-of-271 for a school-record 60.1 field goal shooting percentage, topping the previous mark of 59.0 FG% held by Marty Schoepfer ('70).
  • Scanlon recorded a team-high 14 points while adding five rebounds and five assists ... Besides averaging 10.5 ppg for the year, he led BU in rebounding (5.5 rpg), assists (3.0 apg) and steals (44). 
  • Owner of 17 points in the last win at Bucknell with five 3-pointers, senior Will Goff went 0-of-3 today from behind the arc but still ended his career No. 8 all-time at 40.2 3FG%.
  • Both freshmen Walter Whyte and Sukhmail Mathon recorded 10 points apiece in the contest while combining for 10 rebounds ... After missing four games to injury, the All-PL Rookie Team member Whyte averaged 12.5 ppg in the last four contests ... Mathon reached double figures for the third time this season and second at Bucknell.
  • Senior Nick Havener ended his career with 571 points and 493 rebounds, while classmate Eric Johnson had 163 assists.
  • Brown led Bucknell with 26 points while fellow All-PL First Team member Foulland had 14 points and eight rebounds.
  • Reigning PL Player of the Year Zach Thomas was held to to six points and six rebounds, but Nate Sestina came off the bench to tally seven points, eight rebounds and five assists.
  • Bucknell won two of three games this season to improve to 12-4 all-time against the Terriers, as they met in the PL tournament for the first time ever.
  • No. 5 BU was seeking its first road win at a No. 1 seed in a conference tournament since beating Canisius in 1985.
  • The Bison will next host No. 2 Colgate in the PL Final on Wednesday (March 7) at 7:30 p.m.
