BOSTON – After senior
David Riccio sent the game to overtime with his first-career collegiate goal, senior
Adam Wright headed in his first-ever game winner in the 97th minute to help the Boston University men's soccer team rally for a thrilling 2-1 victory over Bucknell on Sunday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
With back-to-back one-goal conference wins this week, the Terriers (5-9-3, 4-3-1 PL) have clinched a spot in next week's Patriot League tournament. Both senior
T.J. Butzke and freshman
Kari Petursson assisted on the golden goal, while senior keeper
Mike Bernardi had five saves against the Bison (6-7-3, 3-4-1 PL).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bison took the lead in the 40th minute when Alex Clarke headed a long pass from Patrick Mahoney up the field past a pair of defenders and then managed to bring the ball toward the box before firing an eight-yard shot past Bernardi.
- The teams were tied at the half in shot attempts (5-5) with Bernardi recording the lone save in the 10th minute.
- Bucknell nearly extended the lead in the 54th minute, but Cody Wax's low shot attempt from the top of the box nailed the right post.
- Bernardi added a save at 61:27 to keep the deficit at 1-0.
- BU netted the equalizer in the 69th minute in a series of events that started with Petursson sending a 30-yard free kick toward the left post.
- Bison keeper Ryan Ott tried to clear the ball but his outstretched arms deflected the ball toward the goal line, at which point junior Satchel Cortet played it back to an unmarked Riccio for the quick point-blank shot.
- Bucknell tried to escape with a win in the final 10 seconds, but the first shot was blocked and the second attempt went wide.
- Three minutes after Bernardi's final save in overtime, Butzke played the ball up the left side and used a quick touch to set up Petursson's cross and Wright's header at 96:51 for the victory.
