BOSTON – Concluding a two-game homestand, the Boston University men's basketball team will host Colgate on Thursday (Jan. 11) with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.
The Terriers and Raiders are currently in a three-way tie for first in the Patriot League at 3-1 alongside Bucknell. BU and Colgate though have yet to share a common conference opponent.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU is 3-3 at home this season, having claimed back-to-back wins over Army West Point (90-82) and Lehigh (92-81).
- Despite missing leading scorer and senior Cedric Hankerson (14.7 ppg) due to injury, the Terriers posted the most points ever in a regular season PL game since joining the conference in the summer of 2013 against the Mountain Hawks.
- The Terriers rank 61st nationally in 3-point shooting percentage (.382), 69th in steals per game (7.5) and 81st in turnover margin (2.0).
- In PL play, BU is shooting an even more impressive 42.7 percent from the behind the arc ... Senior Will Goff (7.5 ppg) currently leads the league at 57.7 3FG% after hitting a career-high five 3-pointers in wins over Bucknell and Lehigh.
- Both sophomores Max Mahoney (12.6 ppg) and Tyler Scanlon (9.6 ppg) are averaging 16.0 ppg in conference play ... They are also both averaging 5.0 rpg on the season with Scanlon leading the Terriers in both assists (2.7 apg) and steals (1.6 spg).
- After Scanlon posted a double-double in two games last week, freshman Walter Whyte (8.1 ppg) earned his first on Monday against Lehigh with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
- Senior Nick Havener (8.3 ppg) and freshman Javante McCoy (8.0 apg) are two of the other six Terriers averaging at least eight points per contest ... Havener made his first appearance on Monday against Lehigh since suffering a leg injury at Harvard back on Dec. 21.
- The Terriers are averaging 74.6 ppg and 46.3 FG% while holding opponents to 75.2 ppg and 45.9 FG%, respectively.
SCOUTING COLGATE
- The Raiders have played well recently, winning five of their last six games ... However, they are just 2-6 on the road compared to 6-1 at home with wins at Holy Cross (79-74) and at American (72-63).
- Besides dropping an 83-79 decision at Boston College, Colgate shared two non-conference opponents with the Terriers, as both fell to UConn and Albany.
- Colgate ranks 23rd nationally in made 3-pointers per game (10.3) and 46th in 3FG percentage (.388) ... The Raiders also rank 94th in assist-turnover ratio at 1.19.
- Colgate has four Raiders averaging double figures in scoring with reigning PL Rookie of the Year Will Rayman leading in both points (15.3 ppg) and rebounds (6.8 rpg).
- Jordan Swopshire is second at 12.9 ppg with Sean O'Brien (11.4 ppg) and Jordan Burns (11.3 ppg) close behind.
- Colgate is averaging 75.1 ppg and 46.2 FG% while holding opponents to 71.5 ppg and 43.7 FG%, respectively.
SERIES HISTORY
- The Terriers lead the all-time series, 26-19, as the teams were previously members of the America East together from 1979-1989.
- They met for the first time in 2014 since Colgate left to join the PL with BU claiming a sweep en route to the Patriot League regular season title.
- After Colgate claimed a sweep in 2015, the teams have posted a split with the home teams winning in 2016 and the road teams winning in 2017.
- In the last meeting at Colgate, BU jumped out to a 25-9 lead and held on for the 69-68 wire-to-wire victory, as the Raiders pulled within two with under 30 seconds to go ... Justin Alston ('17) led the Terriers with 21 points and 10 rebounds, as the teams shot a combined 13-of-50 (.260) from behind the arc.
- In Colgate's 67-58 win at Case Gym, the returning Rayman and O'Brien combined for 41 points, while graduates Alston and Eric Fanning ('17) combined for 39 for the Terriers ... BU cut a 10-point deficit to one at 3:05 and two at 1:25 but missed its final five shots of the game for a 67-58 loss.
