LOWELL, Mass. – Down by as many as 10 with under 3:40 to play, the Boston University men's basketball team rallied to cut the deficit to one at 26.6 seconds but ultimately came up short at UMass Lowell, 87-82, on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore
Max Mahoney led all players with a career-high 29 points and 11 rebounds for his first-ever double-double, as the Terriers (4-5) finished the game 36-of-64 (.563) from the field. The River Hawks (6-5) though shot 57.7 percent in the second half and managed to quadruple BU in free throw attempts, 36-9, to improve to 6-1 at home this season.
TURNING POINT
- UMass Lowell was only down three at the half (34-31) despite BU shooting 62.5 percent by forcing nine turnovers, including five off steals from Rinardo Perry.
- The Terriers committed six of their eight second-half miscues in the first five minutes coming out of the locker room, as UML opened on an 11-2 spurt to take the lead for good.
THE RALLY
- Josh Gantz hit the River Hawks' ninth and final 3-pointer at 3:39 for a 75-65 lead, but sophomore Tyler Scanlon came right back with a 3-pointer and senior Cedric Hankerson added a layup to cut the deficit to five.
- UML hit six free throws over the next 2:30, including a pair with 37 seconds left, to maintain an 81-75 lead.
- Mahoney hit a jumper on the ensuing possession and Scanlon then swiped the ball away from Matt Harris before feeding Hankerson for a 3-pointer to pull BU within one, 81-80.
- Quickly fouled on the inbounds, UML hit two free throws and added two more after senior Will Goff missed a contested game-tying 3-pointer from the corner with 10 seconds remaining in regulation to help seal the win.
THE SETUP
- Down by two (17-15) with 9:15 left in the first half, the Terriers held UML without a field goal for five minutes to grab their largest lead of the game, 26-18 ... Both Scanlon and freshman Walter Whyte scored from behind the arc during the 11-1 run.
- The River Hawks used Gantz's 3-pointer at 3:52 to spark a 13-4 run capped by three free throws from Harris to retake the lead, 31-30.
- BU though entered the locker room ahead, 34-31, with the help of back-to-back layups from Mahoney and Hankerson.
GAME NOTES
- Mahoney went 14-of-18 from the field en route to 29 points, 13 more than his previous high, and topped his previous best in rebounds by two … He also added a career-high three blocks.
- Hankerson went 8-of-19, including 2-of-7 in 3-point territory, and 2-of-2 at the charity stripe to reach 20 points for the second time this season.
- Scanlon became the first Terrier to dish out five assists this season while adding six points and six rebounds.
- Whyte reach double figures for the second time this season with 11 points, one shy of his personal best, on 5-of-7 shooting.
- The Terriers suffered their first loss under head coach Joe Jones when shooting above 55 percent to move to 10-1 in such contests.
- The River Hawks' Harris went 6-of-10 with four 3-pointers and an impressive 11-of-12 at the line en route to 27 points.
- All five UML starters finished in double figures with Jahad Thomas posting 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Perry recorded 16 points, seven boards, five steals, two blocks and two assists.
- Shooting 15-of-26 (.577) in the second half after being held to 10-of-24 (.417) in the first, UML evened the all-time series, 3-3, with its second-consecutive home win after escaping with a 77-75 victory last season.
NEXT UP: ELON
- Terriers will return home and host Elon on Sunday (Dec. 17) at 1 p.m.
- The contest will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
