Senior Ally Adams scored with 16 seconds left to complete a second-half comeback and lift the Terriers to a 14-13 victory over Vanderbilt on Tuesday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
Adams sparked the Terriers' comeback, cutting the Vanderbilt lead to one on a free position goal with 2:03 left in the game. The Severna Park, Md. native won the next two draw controls and capped the run with the game-winner.
BU (4-4) trailed Vanderbilt (4-5), 9-4, early in the second half and faced a 13-11 deficit with 4:23 to play. Adams and freshman Kaitlin Belval scored 23 seconds apart to tie the contest with 1:40 remaining in regulation to set the stage for Adams' heroics. Senior Mallory Collins fed Adams, who then created space to shoot in the arc and notched her fourth goal of the game.
Adams was one of three Terriers to record three goals on Tuesday, with sophomores Avery Donahoe and Mickenzie Larivee each completing hat tricks. Larivee also had the first two assists of her career, including the helper on Belval's tying goal, to lead the Terriers with a personal-best five points. Donahoe added an assist of her own to finish with a career-high four points.
Collins finished with two points (1g, 1a) and was one of seven Terriers to win a draw control. Senior Jill Horka led BU with seven draw controls and also had an assist. Sophomore Maria Guerra scored her first collegiate goal as part of the comeback while senior Louisa Del Rio also found the back of the net.
Junior Caroline Meegan made several crucial stops and finished the game with 12 saves. Seven of her deflections came in the second half. Junior Taylor Hardison and freshman Kelly Mathews also had an assist as 10 different Terriers recorded a point.
BU opened the scoring just 2:50 into the proceedings. Larivee read a pass from the Commodore keeper and deflected it from its intended recipient. Del Rio picked up the ground ball and quickly found Horka to form a 3-on-1. Horka fed a wide-open Larivee and the sophomore finished the play.
Vanderbilt went on a four-goal run before Adams cut the deficit to 4-2 when she used a screen to send a shot low into the left corner of the net for her first goal of the contest.
Donahoe recorded the Terriers' final two goals of the opening 30 minutes, including a marker off a nifty feed from Larivee with 20 seconds left in the half. However, the Commodores answered with just five seconds to play in the stanza to take an 8-4 lead into halftime.
The Terriers began to mount their comeback when Hardison fed Collins from X just over six minutes into the second half. Then, with the Commodores down a player, Adams converted a free-position chance to cut the deficit to 9-6.
Vanderbilt had a golden chance to regain a four-goal lead, but Meegan stopped a 1-on-0 free-position chance with a terrific save. BU quickly took advantage as Del Rio scored her second goal of the season to make it a 9-7 game.
After another Vanderbilt goal, BU took advantage of a quick restart in the defensive zone. Senior Sofia Robins sent a long outlet pass to Larivee, who caught it just past the halfway line. She ran all the way to the crease before depositing her second goal of the game.
The Commodores again regained a three-goal lead before Guerra's goal with 11:23 to play made it a 10-8 deficit. Vanderbilt capitalized on a BU yellow card, however, to take a 12-9 lead with just under 10 minutes to play.
Larivee completed her hat trick moments later after a Vanderbilt yellow card. Donahoe got the ball at X and found Larivee cutting to the crease for her 20th goal of the season. It was then Donahoe's turn to secure her hat trick as she cut to the middle of the arc and scored her sixth of the season.
Vanderbilt brought its lead back to two at 13-11 with 4:23 remaining in regulation before the Terriers tallied the final three goals of the game to earn the dramatic victory.
BU is back in action on Saturday, March 26 when the Terriers host reigning Patriot League Champion Loyola Maryland on Nickerson Field. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be aired live on the Patriot League Network.
