QUEENS, N.Y. - An impressive defensive effort coupled with late goals from Alexandra Cooper and Clare Pleuler put the Boston University women's soccer team past St. John's, 2-1 in overtime, on Saturday night in the NCAA First Round at Belson Stadium.

With the win, BU advances to the NCAA Second Round for the fifth time in program history and now owns the most postseason wins by a Patriot League school at two despite being a conference member for just three years. The Terriers will next take on Penn State on Friday, Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. in University Park, Pa.

Cooper scored her first goal of the season in the nick of time as she tied the game in the 78th minute to force an overtime period, during which Pleuler netted her fourth game-winner of the season.

It was a team effort to keep one of the best scoring teams in the country from getting on the board for the final 73 minutes of the game, which included three saves by Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year Alyssa Parisi and two goal line stops by forward Jenna Fisher.

PL Defender of the Year McKenzie Hollenbaugh and Rachel Bloznalis were a force to be reckoned with as the duo shut down the second-best goal scorer in the nation, Rachel Daly, who was limited to just an assist on the night despite her best efforts.

The Red Storm was dominant throughout the first half but was limited to just one goal despite staying in the attacking third for the majority of the period. St. John's capitalized on a corner, heading in the service to take a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.

The incredible stops that the Terrier defense continuously came up with gave the team momentum coming out of halftime and BU dominated the ball throughout the second half. The Terriers found several chances but it wasn't until the 78th minute that Cooper was able to net the game-winner.

McKenna Doyle slid the ball to Cooper at the top of the box, who shot it to the left post for the game-tying score.

Jenna Fisher and Christina Wakefield's play in the final minute stopped everyone's heart as the pair had the jump on the defense in a wide-open box. Fisher passed to Wakefield but her shot was a second too late and was blocked, forcing an overtime period.

St. John's never had a chance in the final period of play as the Terriers hunted for the win. It finally came in the 94th minute when Julianna Chen set Pleuler up right in front of the goal line and she sent in the game-winner for the fourth time this year.

BU outshot St. John's, 18-16 including 12-6 in the second half. The Terriers also did an excellent job on thwarting the Red Storm's seven free chances from the corner and a pair of free kicks just outside the box.
