Washington, D.C. - Highlighted by junior Matt Gilbert's season-high eight saves and junior Felix De Bona's fourth-minute goal, the Boston University men's soccer team claimed a 1-0 victory at American in windy and wet conditions Saturday afternoon.
Extending their unbeaten streak to four games and also becoming the first opponent to shut out the Eagles (6-4-1, 0-2-0 PL) this season, the Terriers improve to 6-2-1 (1-0-1 PL). BU is now also unbeaten in its last 11 conference regular season matchups (7-0-4), the program's longest stretch since going 10-0-2 during 2001-02.
One minute after Gilbert's first save, BU struck quickly at 3:39 when freshman Adam Wright sent in a cross for De Bona to finish for his fourth goal of the season. The assist marked Wright's second of the year.
The Terriers earned five corner kicks in the first half but only managed four shot attempts battling challenging conditions caused by Hurricane Joaquin, while the Eagles, nationally ranked just two weeks prior, bombarded the BU backline with 11 shots. Gilbert recorded three saves to keep BU ahead, 1-0, entering the locker room.
Early in the second stanza, Gilbert made a impressive kick save, as the Eagles tried to score on the run from right to left in the box. He later made a quality leaping save in the 79th minute and caught a 25-yard free kick from AU in the 85th minute to post his fourth shutout of the season, first on the road.
The Eagles ended the contest ahead in both shot attempts, 21-6, and corner kicks, 7-6. Dylan Hobart had two saves in the loss. Gilbert was one shy of his personal best set in 2013 at Army West Point to help the Terriers move to 1-1-1 all-time against American.
BU will remain on the road and next visit Colgate on Wednesday (Oct. 7) at 7 p.m.
