BOSTON - Senior Dominique Badji scored with 1:06 remaining in the second overtime to send the No. 24 Boston University men's soccer team to the Patriot League Championship, as the Terriers defeated Army, 1-0, on Friday night at Nickerson Field.
The top-seeded Terriers and the sixth-seeded Black Knights seemed destined for penalty kicks until Badji headed home classmate Cameron Souri's cross for the golden goal. They will next face No. 5 Bucknell, who later in the evening advanced past No. 2 Navy off penalty kicks, at 1 p.m. on Sunday for the automatic NCAA berth.
BU improved to 12-3-4 overall while Army finished its season at 6-8-6. Badji, the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, fired home his eighth goal of the year and his third game-winner of the season. Souri’s assist was his first of the season. Senior Nick Thomson needed to make just one save to keep his ninth clean sheet of the campaign. The BU backline was responsible for the ease of Thomson’s evening, led by senior Kelvin Madzongwe, Patriot League Rookie of the Year Bjarki Benediktsson and junior Jeroen Blugh.
Benediktsson sent a seemingly harmless ball into the Army box, where freshman David Amirani raced past a defender and tried to poke the ball past Winston Bolt but was turned aside. Senior Jordan Barker had a good look on a free kick from a dangerous area, but his try sailed just wide as a few Terrier heads came close to nodding the ball into the back of the net.
The Terriers’ best chance of the first half came on a corner kick with under two minutes to play. Army cleared the initial ball, but the Terriers kept the play alive and the ball eventually landed at the feet of d Amirani, whose shot towards goal was redirected by junior Lucas McBride and off the crossbar. Classmate Richie Robinson had a second chance off the rebound but his attempt went over the bar.
In the second half, Thomson made a nice play to keep Army off the board when he came off his line to challenge Nick Williams and force the Black Knight’s chip well wide. McBride then nearly sent a sensational header past Army keeper Winston Boldt (10 saves) but his long-range effort went wide. With seven minutes remaining, Souri had a hit from distance as the ball bounced to him off a corner kick, but his chance was parried aside by Boldt.
BU nearly won the game in regulation but Boldt and an Army defender came up with two dazzling stops on a pair of close-range attempts by Robinson with about one minute remaining. A Black Knight headed a cross that came into the box but the ball landed at Barker’s feet. His shot was blocked by his own teammate Robinson, who had two tries from the edge of the six – the first was kept out by a defender before Boldt stopped the second shot.
Amirani had a great look early in the first period of extra time as a corner kick landed right at his feet just inside the 18. He did great to create space for a shot, but it curled wide. Benediktsson had a huge block on a Williams shot shortly after Amirani’s attempt to keep Army off the board. The Black Knights had one more run towards the golden goal but it was well-defended by the Terriers, who went on to claim the full result moments later.
On Sunday, the Terriers will be trying to earn its 15th NCAA berth overall and first since 2008. They and the Bison just met last Saturday at Bucknell and came away with a 1-1 draw. Tickets are $2 for youth and students with ID and $5 for adults. The first 100 BU students with ID will gain free admission to the game.
