PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Highlighted by a doubles win against the 39th-nationally ranked pair from Boston College, the Boston University women's tennis team opened the 2012-13 season at the three-day Brown Invitational over the weekend.
Ranked as high as No. 67 last year, the duo of senior Jessi Linero and junior Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis rebounded from an opening-round loss to Brown (8-3) with three consecutive victories to claim the consolation doubles title. They defeated pairs from Binghamton (8-2) and Rutgers (8-6) before earning a thrilling 8-6 victory over BC's No. 39 Alex Kelleher/Olga Kymylev.
Freshman Lauren Davis had similar success in singles to win the consolation title in the top draw. After Friday's loss to Brown, she cruised past Binghamton's Katherine Medianik (6-2, 6-3) to reach the consolation final against Rutgers' Vanessa Petrini, who finished last season ranked 20th in the region and earned All-Big East accolades.
Davis battled hard to win the first set and then comfortably won the second to conclude her first event as a Terrier with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Petrini. She also went 2-2 in doubles with freshman Madison Craft.
Sophomore Sami Lieb was the other Terrier to earn two wins as she finished third in the Gold Draw. She first claimed the super tiebreaker to defeat Brown's Sarah Kandath, 4-6, 7-6(5), 11-9 before dropping a 6-2, 6-2 decision to the Bears' Hannah Camhi. She then finished with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Rutgers' Stefania Balasa.
Lieb also posted a 2-2 mark in doubles action with sophomore Kendal Drake. In other singles action, Craft and sophomore Marina Fileva earned a victory.
The Terriers will have three weeks to train before returning to action on Oct. 19 at the ITA Regionals.
