BOSTON - Boston University men's soccer freshman Dominique Badji recorded his first career goal early in the first half, but Seton Hall rallied to pull out a 2-1 overtime victory on Friday night at Nickerson Field. Holding a 19-15 advantage in shot attempts, the Terriers drop to 1-3, while the Pirates improve to 2-1-1.
Badji headed in a cross at 9:12 from classmate Sanford Spivey to put BU ahead, 1-0. Named America East Player of the Game, Spivey added a header of his own but on the defensive end 10 minutes later to clear a potential SHU score.
The Terriers had multiple chances to pull away, but the Pirates recorded the equalizer at 59:10 and added the final blow at 96:35 to even the all-time series at 1-1. Freshman Nick Thomson posted three saves, while Anthony Reichwaldt had seven for SHU.
Senior Stephen Knox and classmate Ben Berube combined for nine shot attempts, including one from Berube in the 29th minute that was just wide of the far post during a fastbreak. With nine minutes remaining in the half, Knox seemed to set up sophomore Vicente Colmenares for the score with a cross, but Colmenares was inches offsides, nullifying the goal.
The Pirates took advantage of the missed opportunities by notching the equalizer off a header from Giovanni Zammiello, who received the cross from Damian Bziukiewicz.
Berube tried to put BU ahead three minutes when sophomore Anthony Ciccone placed a pass from the left side into the box at Berube's feet. However, senior strike tapped the ball just right of the goal. Freshman Cameron Souri had an opportunity during a counter attack in the 77th minute, but Reichwaldt swallowed up the shot to prevent any attempts on the rebound.
During overtime, the Terriers were unable to get a shot off, as the Pirates' Joe Baker, during a counter attack, chipped the ball over the heads of two defenders to the left side to Max Garcia. With no defender in front, the ball hit Garcia's shin and bounced straight over a running Thomson to end the game. Garcia finished with a game-high seven shots.
Looking to snap a three-game losing streak, BU will conclude the three-game homestand against the Big East next Friday (Sept. 16) with No. 3 Connecticut. Action is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
First 200 fans will receive a free t-shirt. BU students are encouraged to attend, as they will receive one free load of laundry from Lazybones Laundry.
