STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Jake O'Brien scored 17 points and Corey Lowe added 13 for the Boston University men's basketball team, but Stony Brook had four men score in double figures to pull out a 71-55 victory Saturday night at Prichard Gymnasium. Ending a three-game road trip, the Terriers drop to 11-11 and 6-4 in America East play, while the Seawolves (15-7, 7-2 AE) move into the top spot of the league standings.
The Terriers saw the return of both Tyler Morris and Brendan Sullivan from injury but never got into a rhythm offensively, shooting 18-for-54 (.333) from the field, including a combined 11-for-35 (.314) from John Holland, Lowe and O'Brien. Jeff Pelage recorded a team-high five rebounds, while Lowe tallied six assists.
Improving to 9-1 at home, Stony Brook stormed out to a 13-0 run and never saw its lead fall below seven the rest of the game, as the Seawolves earned their third straight win against BU. Led by 19 points from their America East player of the game Muhammad El-Amin and 16 from Chris Martin, they shot 26-for-54 (.481) from the field and controlled the boards the entire game, limiting BU to just four offensive rebounds. Tommy Brenton had 14 and Dallis Joyner posted 11 to help SBU finish ahead, 46-24.
The Terriers didn't help themselves early on, committing three consecutive turnovers before getting off their first field goal attempt at 17:57. El-Amin opened the game with a 3-pointer to ignite the SBU run and added his second of four total a minute later. O'Brien ended the scoring drought at 15:35 with a layup.
BU came back to cut the deficit to seven, 15-8, with 14:14 remaining. After a defensive rebound, O'Brien missed an open 3-pointer, as it rimmed in and out, that would have brought the game within four. SBU made sure the Terriers wouldn't get any closer, going on a 7-0 run capped by Danny Carter's trey at 10:20.
After stealing the ball from Martin, Lowe fed a driving Carlos Strong, who made an emphatic dunk over Brenton to put the game at 33-26 with 1:20 left in the half. The Seawolves came back with four consecutive made free throws, but Strong answered with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer in the corner to enter the half down only 39-29.
The Terriers shot 36 percent from the field, while SBU hit 50 percent of its attempts. BU kept the game relatively close though by driving to the basket and shooting 12-for-13 from the line with Lowe hitting all six of his attempts. In the second stanza though, they would only make six trips to the line.
Strong began the half with a layup to bring BU within eight, but he missed the free throw following the foul. Holland missed a 3-point attempt to cut the deficit even further after a SBU turnover, and the Seawolves went on a 14-5 run capped by Danny Carter's 3-pointer at 12:33 for the 53-36 lead.
They built the lead as high as 18 before finishing with the 16-point victory. SBU had 24 points from the bench against BU's six, while committing three more turnovers, 14-11.
The Terriers will return home to host New Hampshire on Thursday, Feb. 4, at Agganis Arena, where they have won four of their last five games.
