Battling two preseason ITA nationally-ranked players to three sets, the short-handed No. 61 Boston University women's tennis team played tough but just couldn't get the breaks when needed, as No. 65 Harvard earned a 7-0 decision Saturday afternoon in the opening match of the spring season for both teams.
Missing freshmen Jessi Linero and Vivien Laszloffy along with senior Elizabeth Corrao and junior Vanessa Steiner, the Terriers only had five players take to the court and had to default a contest in both singles and doubles action.
As a result of a default, the Crimson quickly captured the doubles point when Kristin Norton/Hideko Tachibana defeated Stefanie Nunic and Petra Santini, 8-2. Holly Cao/Samantha Rosekrans won the other contest with an 8-5 victory over Francine Whu/Monika Mical.
In singles action, Whu and Mical each had strong performances, losing in three sets each against stiff competition. No. 86 Hideko Tachibana defeated Whu in the No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-7(8), 6-3 decision, while No. 95 Sophie Chang defeated Mical, 3-6, 7-5, 10-5. Stefanie Nunic also faced a difficult opponent in No. 79 Cao at the top singles position, falling 6-4, 6-4.
The Crimson completed the sweep with a point resulting from a BU default at No. 6 and another from Agnes Sibliski defeating Inayat Khosla, 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 5 spot.
The Terriers will have little time to regroup, as they next host No. 48 Yale on Sunday (Jan. 24) at 12 p.m.
