BOSTON - In its best offensive outing of the season, the Boston University women's soccer team shut out Vermont, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at Centennial Field. Junior Emily Pallotta netted two goals and classmate Farrell McClernon posted one goal and added an assist, as the Terriers improve to 7-5-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the America East. Vermont falls to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
The Terriers scored early and often, finding the back of the net in the sixth minute when Pallotta one-timed a cross from McClernon, which hit off the post and bounced in for her third goal of the season. Three minutes later, sophomore Mara Osher sent a pass to senior Marisha Schumacher-Hodge, who then unloaded a low, hard shot from 18-yards out to give BU a two-goal cushion just nine minutes into the match.
At 12:59, McClernon upped the lead to three with an unassisted tally off a Vermont turnover outside the 18-yard box. Pallotta then rounded out the scoring in the 25th minute with a chip over Vermont goalkeeper Eliza Bradley. Osher picked up the assist the goal.
Sophomore Janie Reilly and freshman Annie Tooley split time in net, but the BU backline, led by junior Casey Brown and sophomore Lina Cords, held the Catamounts without a shot on goal.
The Terriers outshot the Catamounts by a 22-2 margin and forced Bradley to make 12 saves. Brown led all players with six shots. BU also earned six corner kicks, while UVM picked up one. The Terriers' four goals were the most in a single game since their 4-0 victory over Albany on Oct. 4, 2007.
BU will now prepare for Binghamton on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. The game will be televised on Fox Soccer Channel.
