Terrier freshman midfielder Allison Merkle, whose two goals helped power the B.U. women's soccer team to a 7-4 win over the University of Rhode Island last Sunday (September 12th) has been named the America East Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week.
A resident of Baltimore where she was a four-year starter at Catholic High School, Merkle scored both her goals in the first half during which the Terriers opened up a 5-1 lead. The Rams managed to score three late goals in the second half to cut the Terriers' lead to 6-4. However, B.U. scored an insurance goal to account for the final margin.
The two goals were the first of Merkle's collegiate career. She also has an assist to bring her point total to six points.
"Allison has started all six of our games this year, and she has been playing very well," said Terrier head coach Nancy Feldman, whose team is 3-3-0 with upcoming games at New Hampshire on Friday (September 26th) and at Maine on Sunday (September 26th).
This marks the second straight week America East has honored a Terrier women's soccer player with a weekly award. Last week, Deidre Enos was named the league's Player of the Week after scoring two goals in the team's 4-3 double overtime win against Northwestern.
