BOSTON - Senior Andrea Walkonen of the Boston University women's cross country team finished first in a field of 301 runners at the New England Championship on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Park. The Terriers finished fifth out of 45 teams as Boston College won the meet. Walkonen won the New England Championship for the second season in a row and won her second race of this season.
Buoyed by four top-ten finishes, the Eagles tallied 38 points to win the meet, followed by Brown (141), Williams (190), Dartmouth (193). BU posted 201 points, good enough to top a deep field that included Providence (516, 17th place), ranked 20th nationally in Division I, as well as regionally-ranked New Hampshire (220, seventh place), Quinnipiac (317, 10th place) and Vermont (350, 11th place).
Walkonen led the pack, navigating the course in 17:19 to beat the second-place finisher, senior Elise Tropiano of Amherst, by 19 seconds. BU junior Erin Lagasse was next across the finish line, posting a 17:40 to finish third. Junior Sarah Mosser finished in 46th place with an 18:46, just ahead of sophomore Kathleen Davies, who crossed in 53rd place in 18:49. Senior Mollie Zapata rounded out the scoring with a 96th-place finish in 19:26. Freshman Amanda Solly was the Terriers' only other entrant in the varsity race and she finished in 230th place with a 21:05.
The Terriers are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 25, racing in the CCSU Mini Meet in New Britain, Conn., at 10:45 a.m.
