SAN DIEGO, Calif. – After totaling just three runs over the previous 20 innings, the Boston University softball team broke out with 15 combined runs to end the San Diego Classic victoriously against co-hosts San Diego State and San Diego Sunday afternoon.
The Terriers (15-5) took advantage of three doubles to avenge Saturday's 2-0 loss to the Aztecs (13-7), 5-3, and then utilized a program record-tying three triples to run-rule the Toreros (6-15), 10-1, in five innings.
Graduate student
Nicole Amodio led the offense with a combined five RBIs, while junior
Kate Pryor earned a team-high four hits. In the circle, senior
Allison Boaz (8-2) limited SDSU to two earned runs for a complete game victory, and freshman
Kasey Ricard (5-2) followed with six strikeouts against USD for the second complete game win.
GAME 1: BU - 5, San Diego State - 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After helping turn a line out double play in the bottom of the first, freshman Brooke Deppiesse started the second by singling to third and then advancing two bases on graduate student Emily Gant's double down the right field line.
- With one out, sophomore Tyesha Williams plated Deppiesse with a single down the left field line and then scored alongside Gant on Amodio's two-RBI double to left for the 3-0 advantage.
- The Aztecs rallied in the third against Boaz with three runs off four singles, including a two-out, two-RBI hit.
- SDSU would manage just three more singles the rest of the game along with one walk.
- Deppiesse led off the sixth with a single and moved alongside Gant into scoring position on freshman Aimee Metz's sac bunt.
- With two outs, Amodio proved clutch with a two-RBI single to right to grab the lead for good.
- Junior Lauren Keleher tried to add an insurance run with a lead-off double in the seventh but ended up stranded at third.
- SDSU tried to rally with a lead-off walk and one-out infield single, but Boaz shut the door with a ground out and line out for the victory.
GAME 2: BU - 10, San Diego - 1 (5 inn.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With two outs in the top of the first and bases empty, USD committed back-to-back fielding errors, leading to Deppiesse scoring for the 1-0 lead.
- After Ricard earned three strikeouts in the bottom half, BU broke open with three runs off three hits during the second.
- Amodio started with a walk, took second on Pryor's first of three singles, reached third on Williams' sac bunt and scored on senior Audrey Seller's RBI grounder.
- Keleher followed with a two-out RBI triple that helped set up junior Kayla Roncin's RBI double and prompted a pitching change.
- The Toreros got on the scoreboard with a one-out single and two-out RBI double but would manage just one single the rest of the game.
- Gant delivered a triple in the third before scoring on Amodio's RBI single up the middle.
- Williams extended the lead to 6-1 on an RBI sac fly to left.
- BU added four more runs in the fourth with senior Caitlin Coker hitting an RBI triple and scoring on Gant's RBI single.
- Pryor followed Amodio's two-out walk with an RBI single and then drew a rundown on the base paths during a stolen base attempt to help Amodio reach home from third.
- Ricard sealed the victory by earning three fly outs following a lead-off single.
DOUBLEHEADER NOTES
- Amodio moved up to No. 5 all-time at BU with 123 career RBIs.
- The Terriers have won five of the last seven meetings against SDSU and are 2-0 against USD.
