HOW IT HAPPENED
- The River Hawks broke a 2-2 tie on a power play at 8:53 of the third period as a blocked shot redirected right to Kenny Hausinger's stick and the freshman scored the game winner.
- BU quickly answered an early Lowell goal as both teams scored on their first shot of the contest.
- Off an initial rush, Joe Gambardella gave the home team a 1-0 lead with a sharp wrister from the left circle that found the far corner just 1:35 into the contest.
- Under two minutes later, freshman Patrick Harper stole a puck in the Lowell zone and created space in the slot before wristing home his ninth goal of the season.
- With two Terriers in the penalty box, sophomore Bobo Carpenter gave the Terriers a 2-1 lead at 2:31 of the second when he picked off a pass to create a breakaway, which he scored on for an impressive 3-on-5 shorthanded goal.
- Just past the midpoint of the game, Lowell's Ryan Lohin converted from the left slot to make it a 2-2 affair.
- The Terriers could only muster a combined eight shots in the first two periods before putting 15 on goal in the third.
- Freshman Jake Oettinger made 23 saves for the Terriers while fellow freshman Tyler Wall stopped 21 BU shots.
GAME NOTES
- The teams split their season series as the Terriers earned a 4-2 home win over the River Hawks 13 days ago.
- Freshman Clayton Keller brought a nation-best 15-game point streak (11g, 14a) into the contest but came up short in his attempt to tie BU's freshman record of 16 held by Tony Amonte (1989-90) and Mark Fidler (1977-78).
- This was just the second time in nine starts that Oettinger allowed more than two goals.
- UMass Lowell held a 26-23 shot advantage and went 1-of-6 on the power play while killing off all five of BU's chances with the man advantage.
- BU is now 46-15-4 all-time in games that have taken place in between the two rounds of the Beanpot
