Poulin Postgame | Wakefield Postgame
BOSTON - Former Boston University women's ice hockey standouts Marie-Philip Poulin and Jenn Wakefield returned to campus on Wednesday night with the Canadian National Women's Team and led their country to a 5-1 win over the United States in front of a sold-out crowd at Agganis Arena.
Playing together on campus for the first time since 2012, Poulin and Wakefield combined for a goal and two assists in Canada's victory. The duo was instrumental in Canada icing the game, as Poulin assisted on a goal with just 1:37 remaining in the second period to extend Canada's lead to 3-1. Then, with just 15 seconds to play in the period, Wakefield forced a USA turnover and set up her team's fourth goal of the contest. In the third period, Poulin, who captained Canada on Wednesday, capped the scoring when she intercepted a pass in the USA zone and fired the puck past Alex Rigsby.
Poulin and Wakefield last skated together at Agganis on Jan. 28, 2012, when they once again combined for a goal and two assists in a 3-2 win over Northeastern. As Terriers, the duo scored 142 goals and 150 assists and helped BU reach two national title games and win three Hockey East championships.
The two teams will now turn their attention to the Four Nations Cup, which takes place Nov. 7-12 in Tampa, Florida. Poulin and Wakefield are both in consideration for Canada's 2018 Olympic squad. They both won Olympic gold with Canada in 2014, with Poulin also claiming Olympic gold in 2010.
