The Head of the Charles is the largest two-day regatta in the world, with more than 11,000 athletes rowing in more than 1,900 boats in 53 races. The event will run 3 miles along the Charles River with the official start line once again being Boston University's DeWolfe Boathouse. The competition attracts tens of thousands of spectators to the banks of the Charles River each year. A schedule for the Boston University varsity teams' races is below.

2:23 p.m. – Men's Club Eights (36 entries)

Women - Openweights
On the women's openweight side, the Terriers will send out two boats on Sunday, starting with the championship four boat racing at 1:30 p.m. The BU openweight championship eight boat will race at 2:22 p.m. in a field of 36 boats and will look to improve on last year's 22nd-place finish.
"The Head of the Charles is a particularly special event for us at BU," said director of women's rowing Madeline Davis, who will make her BU coaching debut at this year's HOCR. "The rowing world converges on Boston for this weekend with our own boathouse as the start of it all. It's a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with alums and invite families and friends to join us on the banks of the Charles."
Men
The BU men's team will send out five boats to compete over the weekend. The men's club four will start things off on Saturday at 1:37 p.m. looking to improve on last year's impressive third-place finish. BU will send out an "A" and "B" boat to compete in the club eight race beginning at 2:23 p.m. Last year, BU's third varsity eight boat finished third in the club eight competition in a field of 28 boats.
On Sunday, the men's varsity eight will race in the championship eight race beginning at 1:48 p.m. The V8 boat will look to build on last year's strong performance when it finished fifth behind only perennial national powers Yale, Cal, Harvard and Washington. BU will also compete in the championship four race beginning at 1:16 p.m.
"Our team is very excited about racing in the Head of the Charles," said men's rowing head coach Thomas Bohrer. "The energy level is always extremely high as the largest rowing regatta in the world comes to Boston and begins at DeWolfe Boathouse. We will be welcoming many of our alumni back to Boston as they come to cheer on our squad and meet up with former teammates. The weather forecast is predicting a warm weekend which will make the event even better. Along with the Club events and Championship eight, we will also be racing the Championship four which we have not raced in about six years. We feel all our boats are well prepared and we look forward to the weekend."
Women - Lightweight
The women's lightweight rowing team also will compete on Sunday. The lightweights will send out four boats this year with two boats competing in both the lightweight four race (1:30 p.m.) and the lightweight eight race (2:22 p.m.). The Terriers hope to improve on its impressive second-place finish among lightweight collegians last year while the lightweight four finished fourth among lightweight fours in 2016.
"The HOCR also represents the unofficial start to our 2017-18 campaign," said lightweight head coach Malcolm Doldron. "It's a three-mile test of fitness, endurance, and technical efficiency, against the best crews in the world and the BU Lightweights have been preparing accordingly."
Alumni and Staff
Also on Saturday, several coaches and BU alumni will be racing. Men's head coach Tom Bohrer will take on BU boatman Russ Cone in the men's grand master singles race beginning at 9:06 a.m. while men's assistant coach John Lindberg will race in the men's senior master eights at 9:50 a.m. Assistant lightweight coach Abby Knight will compete in the women's championship doubles race which begins at 4 p.m. Also, BU will send out both a men's alumni eight boat (12:59 p.m.) and a women's alumni eight boat (1:18 p.m.) with men's assistant coach Alex Perkins rowing for his alma mater Washington in the men's alumni eight race.
Open House
In addition to the competition, Boston University Rowing will be hosting an Open House for the general public at the DeWolfe Boathouse during the Head of the Charles weekend. Attendees will be able to meet with coaching staff, team-members and tour the facility. Open House hours are Saturday (Oct. 21) between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
