Crossley Nominated for Hockey Humanitarian Award
January 19, 2017 | Women's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - Senior co-captain Alexis Crossley of the Boston University women's ice hockey team was named as one of the 15 nominees for the 2017 Hockey Humanitarian Award, the Hockey Humanitarian Award Foundation announced on Thursday.
Crossley is the first Terrier in program history to be nominated for the award, which is presented the award annually to college hockey's finest citizen — a student-athlete who makes significant contributions not only to his or her team, but also to the community-at-large through leadership in volunteerism. Men and women across all three divisions of NCAA ice hockey can be considered for the award.
A native of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, Crossley has been an integral part of not only the BU community but has also made an impact in the city of Boston at large as well as back in her hometown. She is currently on the executive board of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at BU and has helped initiate such charitable endeavors as the Spike Out Cancer event to raise money in the fight against childhood cancer.
Crossley is also training for the Trans Am Bike Race, which will raise awareness to improve the health and fitness level of children and their families in the Atlantic region that are struggling with weight management, as well as promoting family fitness in her community and beyond. Alexis and her father, who will be riding together in June 2017, have partnered with the IWK Foundation, the IWK Health Center (both based in Halifax, Nova Scotia) and various community businesses to raise funds towards a $30,000 goal for hospital programs associated with supporting children struggling with obesity issues.
Finalists for the Hockey Humanitarian Award will be announced in February. The 2017 recipient will be recognized in a ceremony on Friday, April 7, as part of Frozen Four weekend in Chicago.
