Hanson, Sutherland Secure WHEA Weekly Honors
September 26, 2016 | Women's Ice Hockey
WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Seniors Victoria Hanson and Samantha Sutherland of the No. 10 Boston University women's ice hockey team each earned a weekly award from Hockey East, the league announced on Monday.
Sutherland was selected as the Hockey East Player of the Week while Hanson secured Defensive Player of the Week accolades. Both Terriers were instrumental in a 5-2 win over Providence in Sunday's regular-season opener.
Hanson stopped 34 shots, including 16 in the third period and all 12 she faced from Providence's power play, to backstop BU to victory. On the offensive end, Sutherland recorded her first collegiate hat trick. She lit the lamp in the first period and scored the eventual game-winner at the 5:46 mark of the third period. Sutherland then added an empty netter to complete her hat trick.
BU will have next weekend off, returning to the ice on Oct. 7 to host New Hampshire at Walter Brown Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
