BOSTON – The Bloom Family Leadership Academy at Boston University held its first sessions this week, marking the beginning of the dynamic sports leadership program that provides comprehensive leadership development for student-athletes and coaches.
The academy targets and trains distinct groups of student-athlete leaders chosen by their coaches and provides training throughout the school year to maximize learning, retention and application. The academy also provides coaches with practical and proven strategies that can be implemented as soon as the next practice as well as throughout a lifetime.
The Leadership Academy was started as a result of a commitment by Boston University alumni William Bloom (CGS'82 and SMG'84). Bloom, a former BU rugby player, is a member of the Boston University's Athletic Director's Council, is the Athletics Campaign Co-Chair and a Boston University Overseer.
"The Patriot League's high academic standard, quality of competition, and focus on leadership training really framed this opportunity for me," said Bloom. "Leadership infers teamwork and the many life lessons that can be learned through competition. Given my past with BU rugby, my current association with the athletic department and our school's future with the Patriot league made this a very clear choice for how our family wanted to contribute back to the University."
The Bloom Family Leadership Academy is run by the Janssen Sports Leadership Center which works with over 200 schools across the nation including such institutions as North Carolina, Stanford, Michigan and Notre Dame.
"The beginning of the Boston University Bloom Family Leadership Academy this week comes at a very significant time for BU Athletics," said Boston University's director of athletics Mike Lynch. "We have gone through many significant changes this past year as a department and the Bloom Leadership Academy is among the most important. This generous and thoughtful commitment by Mr. Bloom and his family moves our athletic program into the elite company of just a handful of athletic departments in the country that are dedicating time, energy and resources to leadership development at a very high level. This is a wonderful program and a real "game changer" for BU Athletics."
