This summer, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.
Coming in at No. 7 in this year’s Terrier Twelve is the Boston University women’s tennis team defeating nine-time defending Patriot League champion Army for the program’s first NCAA berth since 2011.
Guided by Patriot League Coach of the Year Lesley Sheehan in her 29th season, the Terriers entered their inaugural season in the PL having captured 22 America East titles and 13 NCAA tournament appearances. They were selected as the preseason champions but only held a one-point advantage over Black Knights.
The two squads met as fellow conference members for the first time in the regular season finale with the No. 1 seed for the PL tournament up for grabs. BU won a hard-fought doubles point and then coasted in singles with five straight-set victories for the dominating 7-0 sweep. With the loss, Army suffered its first conference defeat since 2002 and saw its win streak snapped at 65 matches.
Following the win, BU opened the conference tournament as the top seed with comfortable wins over Lafayette (5-0) and Bucknell (4-0) to set up a rematch with the Black Knights in Lewisburg, Pa.
The Black Knights this time came out ahead in doubles to grab an early 1-0 lead. BU though did not lose its composure and rolled past Army again in singles to claim the PL title and its first automatic NCAA berth since 2011. The Terriers moved to the top of the mountain by dropping just a combined eight games in the top three singles matches.
Sophomore Johanna Hyoty was named the tournament MVP after leading the Terriers at the No. 1 singles and doubles spots during the three-day event. She finished the season with an 18-10 singles record and 19-7 doubles mark to also earn PL Player of the Year honors.
Hyoty teamed for most of the season with senior Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis, and the duo was ranked No. 10 in the northeast region. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Regionals last fall to establish themselves.
Sophomore Lauren Davis finished the season ranked No. 16, just ahead of Hyoty (t-20), with a 13-4 dual singles record. All three Terriers earned All-Conference honors to help BU claim a year-end ranking of No. 9 in the region.
