CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Boston University women's cross country team has been placed tied for second in the America East preseason coaches' poll, while the men's cross country team has been picked to finish sixth in the conference. The results of the votes by the league's head coaches were announced on Tuesday by the league office.

The Terrier women received 52 points, including two first-place votes, tying BU with New Hampshire for second in the poll. Defending champion Stony Brook was picked to repeat, capturing 63 points and the other seven first-place votes.

BU finished second at last season's America East Championship, buoyed by a first-place finish from senior Andrea Walkonen, who returns to headline the Terriers in 2008.

Binghamton was placed fourth with 40 points, followed by Maine (39 points), Albany (25), UMBC (24), Vermont (20) and Hartford (9).

On the men's side, BU was tabbed for sixth place, earning 38 points in the poll. New Hampshire was picked to capture its third straight America East title, garnering 61 points and five first-place votes to edge Stony Brook, which racked up 59 points and three first-place votes. UMBC and Maine tied for third place with 41 points, with the Retrievers earning the final first-place vote. Binghamton was ranked fifth with 39 points, just ahead of the Terriers.

Albany (20 points), Vermont (17) and Hartford (8) rounded out the poll.

The BU men were third at last year's America East Championship and will be counting on junior Eric Ashe to lead a young squad in 2008 after graduating five key seniors.

Both squads open the season on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Dartmouth Invitational in Hanover, N.H. The Terriers will make their only appearance in Boston on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the New England Championships in Franklin Park.
