Barwise Named USTFCCCA Northeast Region Women's Field Athlete of the Year
Junior Allison Barwise and sophomore Rich Peters will each represent Boston University this week (June 6-9) at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Barwise, named the Northeast Region Women’s Field Athlete of the Year on Monday, is making her second straight appearance at the outdoor championships and will compete in the high jump final on Friday. The Orange, Conn., native qualified with a height of 1.81m at the NCAA East Preliminaries in Jacksonville, Fla., last week.
She has the second-best height in the NCAA this season at 1.87m, which also qualified her for the U.S. Olympic Trials to be held in June. Barwise was an All-America selection during the indoor season and is aiming to become the second Terrier in as many years to earn All-America honors twice in a calendar year.
Peters was the national runner-up in the mile at the indoor championships earlier this year and is making his first appearance at the outdoor championships. He will compete in the 1500m run, with the semifinals taking place on Thursday before the final on Saturday. The Bristol, England, native qualified with a time of 3:48.36 at the NCAA East Preliminaries. His best time of the season came at the IC4A Championships when he finished in 343.28.
Like Barwise, Peters was an All-America selection at the indoor championships this year. He was also an All-American during the 2011 indoor season. Peters is attempting to become the first Terrier male to earn All-America honors in the same calendar year since Greg Gonsalves and Anthony Kenneally each accomplished that feat in 1986.
Q & A with Allison Barwise
You were named the USTFCCCA Northeast Region Women’s Field Athlete of the Year on Monday. What does this award mean to you?
It’s such an honor. I didn’t even realize this was a possibility. I really appreciate the award. It’s a great honor amongst some great athletes.
What has this year been like for you en route to the NCAA Championships?
This year has been my breakthrough year. I’ve had a lot of problems with the high jump in the past, getting over some mental obstacles, but this year’s been great. I’ve gotten control of that and it’s really shown and I’m excited to go back to Drake and hopefully have a good performance.
What did it mean for you to reach the height of 1.87m at the ECAC Championships and qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials at the end of June?
It was a great feeling. I’ve been working toward that all season; we knew it was the mark I had to hit. I had some good attempts at it earlier in the season and luckily everything came together at the ECACs and it was a great feeling. I can’t even describe it.
Do you have any nerves going into the NCAA Championships this week?
There’s always nerves. it’s a big championship meet so it’s always in the back of your head. I’m excited and I think it can go really well so I’m just focusing on what I need to do. Whatever happens, happens.
