NEW ORLEANS – Junior Allison Barwise of the Boston University women’s track & field team was named the Northeast Region Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Monday.
Barwise is in the midst of the best outdoor campaign of her career, as she will compete in the high jump at the NCAA Championships on Friday in Des Moines, Iowa. She was the top seed at the NCAA East Preliminaries on May 26 and qualified for Friday’s met with a height of 1.81m. Her best mark of the year, 1.87m, is the second-best height in the NCAA so far this season and qualified her for the U.S. Olympic Trials at the end of June.
The Orange, Conn., native was the Most Outstanding Field Performer at the America East Championships, as she broke her own heptathlon record (5,276 points) and also took first place in the high jump (1.70m). She won the Coaches’ Award for earning the most points of any female competitor.
Barwise is the second Terrier field athlete in the last three years to be named Northeast Region Field Athlete of the Year, as former BU standout Tahari James was recognized by the USTFCCCA in 2009. Barwise was an All-America selection during the indoor season and is aiming to become the second Terrier in as many years to earn All-America honors twice in a calendar year. Senior Katie Matthews accomplished that feat in 2011.
